Best place to stay to visit Erie Canal

If you're interested in seeing locks, both the new ones and the original locks I'd say Albany is the best location. You have the Waterford Flight locks, which are a series of locks right in a row, and the 1820's stone locks right there too, with good public access.
Much of the canal is flat for miles and is actually the Mohawk river, with only an occasional lock every 10miles or so. There are also many miles of walking/bike trails along the canal/river in the Albany area.
There is at least one Erie canal museum or village - maybe it's in the Utica area - not sure. There's not much else in Utica, so I wouldn't drive there just to see the Erie canal.
It would help if we knew where you were coming from, and how much you wanted to see & do.
