Normandy

I am taking my first trip to Paris the second week in October. I understand that there is plenty within the city to more then fill that week. My travel mate would really like to see Normandy during our visit so…I am looking for suggestions on the best way to make this day trip (i.e. rent a car, take the Train, do a professional tour). Your assistance is very much appreciated.
Thank you,
Mary

If you're comfortable with driving, that would be the way to go so you can see some of the off-the-beaten-path places. Pick up a copy of the Michelin Green Guide to Normandy, along with the matching map, and look at the suggested itineraries.

If you are comfortable with driving, the drive from Paris to Normandy is very easy (about 2 hours from Ave. Foch car rental agency to Caen Memorial Museum - straight expressway).

I also know that I have seen many posts on agencies that run day trips from Paris to the D-day sights in Normandy. A search on this forum should provide you with specifics on the agencies names, cost, trip timing, etc.

Well, sure, driving's ideal because it gives you the freedom to determine where you go and how long you linger, but a one-day car rental is usually the same rate as a 3-day car rental, so it might not be very cost-efficient.

On the other hand,I have no idea what the tour companies charge, so maybe it would be a wash.

As an example, a tour to the landing beaches back in 2004 cost 142€ per person, including lunch. I hate to think what the price is now.
