Congratulations, Socceroos
I know it is a travel forum, but I must pass on to the Australian contributors my excitement and congrats at the Socceroos entry to next year's World Cup. Yippee! At least when I watch this time I will be supporting a local team. Well done, guys.

That's a first, but probably because you guys are so used to being tops at most sport that it is normal.
We in Wales never qualify for anything (the European groups are really hard to qualify from and we are a small Nation) if we were to get through to something we too would be very very chuffed.
So as we didn't qualify, I am chuffed with you.

One of the great parts of our recent trip to AU was following the Socceroos. They played their game in Uraguay when we were in Sydney, then played the 2nd game while we were in Melbourne. We watched most of that game with thousands of other people on a big screen in Federation Square-- what an atmosphere!

I don't see this as a positive thing at all. The last thing I want to see is my country becoming as obsessed with this stupid sport as europe is. It's like a godam religion and occupies about 60% of the media's time.
With the flow of immigration into Australia from Europe it is obviously going to become a major sport one day (from our perspective). I'm just not looking forward to it.
During the Ashes (cricket) some dublin radio presenters dared to report on the matches. They were greated by thousands of complaints from ppl asking why they're reporting a british sport yet the same stations spend at least 4 hours every day talking about soccer.
George Best's death has resulted in news reports every day since.
I'm so fucken sick of hearing about soccer! I retreat to Australia for a month every year just to get away from it but it seems that time isn't even sacred. =(
