Rome and not go into the Colosseum?
Sacrilege IMO. Forum yes can be seen from the outside but the Colosseum must be seen (my son once went to Rome and saw neither the Colosseum or Forum but said he say postcards of them in stores!)
Colosseum is awesome from the outside too but you can't see in from out.

<Sorrento and Positano are all about enjoying the views, not hopping from one museum to another.>
You'll only enjoy the views in Sorrento if you have a hotel with views. The town itself is on top of a cliff. There is nothing to see, unlike Positano which slopes and spectacular views can be had from the main road that runs in and out.

Your itinerary is so much better! I vote to break your time up between Venice/Florence/Rome. You will not waste a lot of time jumping from one location to another without enjoying any of them. You won't be disappointed with the big 3.

Hello,
Thank you for the replies, apologies for not replying on a regular basis. So since we are running out of time, we decided to just stick to the above itinerary and make the most out of it.
Venice - 2N
Florence - 4N
Sorrento - 2N
Rome - 2N
I would like to know since we cant really adjust any of the above coz the hotels have been booked, could you please suggest if we could divide Florence and some nearby vineyard farm stay? How far would it be and if its reasonable to stay in a vineyard?

Can someone please tell me how to travel to Sorrento from Florence? What are the options?
High speed rail is the only way to do it.
Circumvesuviana (commuter train) from Sorrento to Naples
Naples station: go up the stairs to purchase tickets & catch the train to Florence.
Choose the express line (local has too many stops).
Advance purchase will save you a little, but reduces flexibility.

Advance purchase will save you a lot I think - but yes those are train-specific and non-changeable buy you could save $50 or so each I think. You can always buy full-fare tickets in Naples and yes the fastest trains are well much faster - be sure you get a direct train to Naples - not having to change in Rome.
