Buying a Used Car in the Dominican Republic – Need Advice

Hi all,

I’ll be staying in the Dominican Republic for a few months and I’m thinking of buying a cheap used car instead of renting.

Has anyone here done this before?

First, you've posted this question on the United Sates forum. You might want to ask the moderators to move it to the Caribbean forum.

Second, you'd be much better off renting a car from a local vendor in the Dominican Republic. While you can find "cheap used cars" for sale in the Dominican Republic you may have difficultly finding one that is in decent condition. In the Caribbean, cheap cars are often in such poor condition they need a lot of repairs. You'll also have deal with registering and insuring the car and, finally, at the end of your stay, you'll have to find a way to sell or dispose of the vehicle. As an outsider you'll en up paying more for the car than it it worth and you'll get a lot less than it's worth when (and if) you are able to sell it.

Get a long-term lease on a car. Don't forget drivers in many developing countries are still learning to drive properly.

"Drive properly" is a subjective term..

In my experience, drivers in the highly developed country where I live either never learned how to drive properly, or with the advent of cell phones & other distractions lost that know-how and pose a menace to pedestrians and other drivers alike.
