Nelson, thanks for reading my report and I'm happy that you enjoyed it. I always regretted not being able to visit Xizhou. And speaking of bike riding, my husband had visited our oldest daughter when she was living and working in Shanghai. (Both of our daughters lived in China for several years after college graduation.) I think this was in 2004. They flew to Yunnan Province and spent several days riding bikes around Dali. That seems to be the thing to do there.
To this day we still laugh about that awful train ride from Kunming to Dali, and that very looong journey home.

This is a good report but I just want to point out that it was in 2017. Things change quickly and often in China. For example, transportation options are certainly different. High speed trains are one improvement to travel quickly rather than overnight trains or buses on some routes.
