Where to Stay in Costa Rica?
My husband and I are planning a last minute trip to Costa Rica and are clueless as to where to stay. We want something on the beach, where my husband can surf and would prefer to fly into San Jose rather than Liberia.
Any suggestions?

Wow, that's pretty broad....What's your budget? How long will you be there? There's lovely beaches all along the West coast...Manuel Antonio, Dominical, Uvita, Mal Pais/Santa Teresa, Pavones, etc. Where ever you stay, you would need to fly, drive or be driven out to the beaches, the closest would be 3 hours or so. Focusing on surfing mainly, your best bets would be Dominical or Mal Pais/Santa Teresa, not sure which hotels to suggest though til have an idea of your budget and what you're looking for in a hotel.

Dominical is one of the best kept secrets in CR. It takes approximately 3 1/2 hours to drive from San Jose, but well worth the effort. The main beach has large waves for experienced surfers. Playa Dominicalito is 10 minutes south and has smaller waves for less experienced surfing (I know, to the middle there are some large breaks). This is one of the most beautiful areas in Costa Rica.
If you want to cut your drive time almost in half, Hermosa is the place. They are holding the Billabong Surf Championships there later this month.

There are great lodging choices in Dominical. I visited several that were all wonderful. Love the area, lots to explore, beautiful beaches, good surfing.
qwovadis -- You put Jaco and Dominical in the same category? Oy.

yeah yeah we could barely drive the car, we were so busy dodging the rain, drugs & prostitutes, lol. I got the impression the OP was looking for a surfer town, not a place that looks like boca raton, fl.

I agree, Mal Pais / Santa Teresa or Dominical.
I posted a hotel report on MP / ST about a week ago. There are some great choices there, in all price ranges. Great waves, pretty beaches and good food.
I haven't been to Dominical in a three or four years. But I have been reading about some very interesting hotels down there. I guess it is time for an inspection!
I agree about Jaco. It never was that pretty of a place to begin with. We passed through back in November. It is busier than ever. Lots of condos, and the old Beatle Bar has become as packed with chicas as the Del Rey.
Other than waves, I have never understood the attraction to Jaco.
Hope this helps! Let me know if I can offer any more advice.
Warm Regards,
