Rio Caliente,Guadalajara is a virtual Shangi-La.Great food, hikes,Yoga and inexpensive prices. 50min. massage for $28.You can get a mud wrap for $8 and a facial for$15. Rooms are $90-100 and that includes all meals and scheduled activities such as water classes, yoga, evening films or entertainment. 1-800-200-2927

We're staying at the Qualton Hotel & Spa in Puerto Vallarta at the end of May. They are supposed to have a fantastic spa, with many facilities and specialized services. You can read about it at Qualton's website at www.qualton.com

Paradise Beach Resort & Spa in Nuevo Vallarta is Paradise. The beach is wonderful, the accomodations great with a full Spa and special extras like messages on the beach and two guided bike trips a day to nearby points of interest, a marina with all kinds of water activities, a zoo with a Bengal Tiger and much more. While there is no need to need to leave the grounds you whould as there is plenty to do and see in the nearby area and Puerto Vallarta is a short cab or bus ride away.

I've been to all the spas already mentioned, but my favorite true spa is Rancho la Puerta. Is is not a hotel, only a spa and much more upscale than rio caliente. I personally hated rio caliente and left early, I didn't find it interesting, it appeared to be poorly maintained and very little exercise optioned were available. RLP has numerous exercise classes, hikes,
activities all day and is very, very clean, the food is delicious!

Rio Caliente is totally great if you are looking to chill out, de-stress and minimize distractions. But if you're after plush and pampering, look elsewhere. RC is quite like a summer camp for grownups, with clean but simple accommodations. Exercise is found through aerobic hiking, yoga, tai chi, and swimming rather than "step aerobics" type activities. I loved it and will go back, but it is not for everyone

Another satisfied Rio Caliente customer, but do agree with above posters characterization - it's more like a summer camp for adults, rather than a high end pampering type of place. But you do get value for the money. Unlike summer camp, you're not in log cabins or tents and the spas services they do provide are extremely reasonably priced and very well executed. I'd love to have one of Raoul's foot reflexology treatments right now! As for the food, it's vegetarian (I'm not) and I did find it very good, despite it being 'good for you'. They have a website, "www.riocaliente.com".
I stayed at the Qualton in P.V. in March...the spa was very good but I was disappointed in the hotel.
I had 2 different friends who had stayed in previous years and from comparing notes they did better than I did. The activities staff didn't do much during the day - although they did put on shows in the evening. The food was very good some nights, then other nights just okay... The bar was ALWAYS busy and they often had to stop the clean glasses to give you a drink? I think the staff tried very hard but they were just too understaffed to be able to deal with everyone! I'd go back and use the spa but I wouldn't stay at the hotel again.

Was wondering about Rancho La Puerta and whether any men have been there and what the experience was like. (I.e, are there enough activities for men.)
