Monteverde to Mal Pais

Once again I need some opinions. We are planning on landing in Liberia then going to Arenal to Monteverde and then to Mal Pais. Is the drive from Monteverde to Mal Pais too much for one day? Should we break it up and if so where? Thanks.

Not if you leave early - Monteverde is pretty close to the Pan-Am Hwy. From there either north to the Friendship bridge then south down the Nicoya Pen. Or, the Pan-Am Hwy south to Puntarenas and the ferry to Playa Naranjo on the Nicoya Pen. Either way it will be a full day counting stops and breaks. The ferry ride is worth it if you have the time. You will see areas there is no other way to see without a boat. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Hi dnc11! I agree with you that it isn't that difficult to transfer from one to the other. I would recommend the ferry, just because it is different and relieves you of driving for 1.5 hour! Be sure to check the ferry schedule before leaving Monteverde. It changes from time to time and you'll need to arrive about 30 minutes early (I'd plan on an hour) to get in line. Also, you need to take the ferry that goes a little further south to Paquera, rather than the Playa Naranjo ferry. There are two.

Question for shillmac & dncee11:
I'll be making the same drive in June, from Mal Pais to Arenal. I'll already be taking the ferry to get to Mal Pais from San Jose. What would you suggest when going to Arenal since we've already taken the ferry, should we try the non-ferry route and drive up the peninsula for variety? Also, if we wanted to split the drive up, is there anyplace you suggest to stay the night along the way to Arenal, incase we don't leave Mal Pais first thing in the morning.

If doing the entire drive in one day, I'd go ahead and take the ferry again. If you want to break it up, I'd drive from Paquera up that eastern side of the peninsula and spend the night at Tamarindo perhaps--about 6 hours from MalPais. From there, it is another 4 (approx) to Arenal. Driving straight from MP to Arenal will take about 7-8, I believe. dnc11?
