I'm going on the Inca Trail in September and I have a random question. Do most people take advantage of the showers at Aguas Calientes on Day 3? Is it even worth the soles?

The showers on Day 3 are actually at the last camp and not in Aguas Caliente. I didn't bother myself, but from what I hear from the other hikers who did, the showers were not hot - not even lukewarm. They use this contraption that attaches to the shower head that's supposed to heat the water as it goes through. It doesn't work very well. I don't think the shower stalls were all that clean either.

I agree w/ lifelist-facilities at last camp did not seem worth it.

For almost everyone in our group, it was a badge of honor to walk into MP on that 4th day tired and dirty. We all strutted around proudly with our backpacks imagining that the people staying at the nearby hotel were impressed.


We actually weren't that bad, because we got boiled water each morning for a clean off, and almost everyone took wet-wipes.

We did take advantage of the hot sulfur springs in Aguas Calientes-felt so good after that hike. If that sounds good to you, take you swimsuit but don't worry about a towel. You can buy/rent towels there.

Have fun. We had a blast doing that hike.

I availed of the shower and it was much welcomed!! Our group was one of the first to arrive at the final camp (we arrived at lunchtime on day 3) so I was actually the first female in the shower that day. When I used it there was plenty of hot water and they were perfectly clean, however I can't vouch that they'd be like that later in the day. For me I felt it was money well spent.

Wet wipes are essential for the other couple of nights though, and I also took an anti-bacterial hand gel that I used constantly as the toilets in all of the campsites were pretty disgusting!

I'm thinking of doing the Inca Trail trek. Could someone provide more detailed descriptions of what to expect? The more mundane the better. What the walk is like, do you get to rest in between, what kind of food you get, what's the tent like, how you clean yourself, toilet, etc. Or refer me to a good, detailed trip report.
