First time in Mexico

Hi everyone! Although my husband and I have traveled extensively in Europe and the Caribbean we are planning our first trip to Mexico this July. I have no idea where to start and was hoping to get some ideas from my fellow fodorites! We have seven days in July, would be flying out of NY, would like to see some pyramids/historical ruins, do some shopping and have at least 2 days of beach time, budget is about $1500 per person. What do you suggest? Thanks in advance!

How about Playa del Carmen which south of Cancun? The hotels are mostly all inclusive and you should be able to do that within your budget. You could make trips to Tulum and Chichen Itza if you want to see the ruins. You could also take the ferry over to Cozumel.

I agree. Playa Del Carmen is a good choice for first timers to Mexico and for what you want to do. I did want to let you know that if you are not the AI type of people, there are also some very nice hotels in town that are NOT all-inclusive.

Thank you for the Playa del Carmen suggestion. Do you think I should spend a day or two in Mexico City as well?

I love Mexico City and I think it's definitely worth seeing. However, it's quite a distance from Playa del Carmen. You could fly into Mexico City, then fly onto Cancun, if you did want to see both.
