best place to travel to in mexico

My husband and I are trying to plan a vacation in January. What is the best city to travel to in Mexico in January in terms of sightseeing. We do want to relax at the beach for a day or so, but would rather spend more time taking in the culture and attractions of the area.

If you're planning on the Yucatan area, I'd suggest Merida. It's a beautiful colonial city with a very lively weekend -- they close down several streets which fill up with musicians and dancers and crafts vendors. It is convenient for visiting Uxmal (for my money the finest ruins in Yucatan) and the Puuc cities.

After that you can head for Valladolid to see Chichen Itza and Ek Balam, and end your trip on the coast somewhere, with Coba and Tulum still to see . . .

As you know from the many forums(a), 95+% of gringos visit the Yucatan; Puerto Vallarta; Los Cabos, etc.
We like the Costalegre.

Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta make a nice combination for what you seek.

We use GDL as an overnight (actually Ajijic), but pretty boring.
Consider the colonial mountain pueblos if beach is not a priority.
Heading for El Careyes in a few days.
