Allegro Papagayo

My family and I are traveling from Atlanta in early April....ages 6, 9 , 41 and 42. Any suggestions, recommendations? Restaurant reservations? I heard you can only book 2 nights?....Do you make reservations for day trips when you get there?

Novice Costa Rica travelers....

Hi moondog:

You can make reservation even before you leave by contacting Vargas Tours.

Ricardo Vargas and his lovely wife Lupita do small group tours.
They live near Coco Beach.

They will pick you up at Allegro Papagayo .
Go to their website:

www.ricardocostaricatours.com

When the website page comes up, you can :
1. Click on "About Us" ..to read about them
then
2. Click on "Enter" to get a list of all their tours and prices.

If you see anything you like you can then e-mail Lupita as she handles all the tour bookings.

e-mail address is :

[email protected]

If you write to her please say that Percy says hello.
She knows me well, I was there 2 months ago and took 6 tours with them.
And we keep in touch via e-mail.

I think the family would like the Palo Verde Tour...your children would be thrilled when they see the cute white face monkeys as they jump from the trees onto the boat!!!!!

Thanks for the info...How did you like the resort? Can you book more than one night at the steak restaurant? Any other concerns or tips for first timers?

Recently stayed near Coco Beach (near Allegro) and took a day trip with an excellent tour guide who was extremely informative and friendly. I highy recommend him! You can email him at [email protected] His name is Roberto. We have taken many tours and his information made this trip (a Palo Verde river tour) the top of the list.

I am a little confused, maybe you can clarify.

You stated that you recently stayed near Coco Beach and took a tour(s) with Roberto.
But ..
On another posting to dfarmer, you stated that you are leaving this Saturday for your FIRST trip to Costa Rica.

Maybe you meant your second trip to Costa Rica.

Thanks
Percy

Oh, you're quick Percy! My parents just returned from CR in January-they were the ones that used Roberto (and also stayed at Fiesta Premier). My mom's not the slickest with posting messages though, so I post a message for her now and then For me personally, my first CR trip is Saturday. And I can't wait!!

Hi shillmac

I am assuming we are all taking about the same Roberto.
How many Tour Guides named Roberto can there be coming from the Fiesta Premier.!!!

I know Roberto does tours and I also think he is no longer at the Fiesta Premier, according to what he told me 2 months ago.

I know that you know him very well also and I am sure your girls remember this good looking fellow ( from Nicargua)!!!!!

He really is a pleasant guy isn't he.!

Hey Percy-I'm pretty sure my mom came across Roberto's name on this forum. But she didn't mention that he was cute! For my trip, unfortunately, we won't be able to make use of his services. We're going to Tortuguero, Manuel Antonio and Montezuma. But after hearing my parents rave about the Fiesta Premier and their tour, I have a feeling the next trip to CR will include that area!

Different strokes. . .

Percy, As for Roberto, I never knew him to be a tour guide--but that doesn't mean he is not doing that now, and doing it well. He usually works with the entertainment/activities at all-inclusives. He does a very good job of emceeing evening shows. Quite talented and very much a people person.

A friend of his has recently returned from a year in Spain and is working at the newly remodeled Grand Occidental Papayago as activities director. It is possible that Roberto has gone over to help him out. These young people in this particular "field" tend to move from one place to another, and then sometimes back to places they have already been.

Roberto has worked at Allegro (where we first met him), Barcelo Playa Tambor, Condevac (RCI property at Playa Hermosa), Fiesta Caribbean near Puntarenas, and Fiesta Premier to name a few. He also worked a few years ago at a Barcelo property in Nicaragua. He has not yet worked Paradisus, but others in his peer group are there. It is interesting. Definitely a different kind of life.

These kids work long hours and very hard at the all-inclusives. Usually from 7:00 or so in the morning until the disco closes at 2:00 in the morning. When the rainy season comes, and they are out in the weather and get sick, they usually have to keep up their work schedule. It is quite grueling. Their room and board is free, but for the most part they are fed rice and beans with just a little variety. They make a little more than the average person--around $350 per month, I think. But it ranges--some of the top dancers at Conchal make around $600 per month--excellent by anyone's standards in Costa Rica!

I felt compelled to go into this detail because those of us who venture onto an all-inclusive property occasionally seldom realize what it takes to entertain us. Our tips are so much appreciated for extra effort.

Shillmac, I totally agree with you. We often find ourselves in very interesting conversations with the staff at all-inclusives, and they do work their tails off! We happily tip them for a job well done. I know my parents tipped Roberto well as his knowledge and enthusiam were unmatched.

Hi shillmac and moondog

Just maybe there is a different Roberto.

I know that he told me he would like to do tours and he also said he was leaving the Fiesta Premier in a few weeks,as his "contract" had run out !

Yes, I full agree, these young people working at the All - Inclusives really do work hard and long shifts and double shifts.

That is why I make sure I tip them for everything..I took $150.00 in $US one dollar bills with me and came back with $6.00 from my "tip envelope".

shillmac , hopefully you or I will meet Roberto again before the year is over !

moondog ,you are coming with two children ,so you will have to pick tours that are cheaper than other( good luck)..that is why I mentioned that the Palo Verde Tour would be great for the kids...
and Vargas does a great job on this tour.

I would not go to Monteverde with the children ..but I would go to Rincon de la Vieja, as this one is sort of like 5 different things in one tour.

Maybe shillmac can add some better ideas.
Have a good time

Percy

Hi back, Percy! Moondog, I second the Rincon de la Vieja idea. Also, Los Inocentes further north for horseback riding.

There are a number of Roberto's in the area but the tour guide............
Roberto (married with 2 children) (Looks 20) works as a guide for me and Ricardo when he is over booked.
He is a freelance guide who is simply ....a, knowledgeable, personable, guy. He just left my house after planning tomorrow's tours to Arenal and Palo Verde. Both Ricardo and I contract guides like Roberto, Mario, David and Minor for the various tours we organize in this area.
