Aeromexico flight through Mexico City?
We're considering changing our flight from New Hampshire to Cancun which is routed through Chicago Midway next month. Our actual destination is Merida, which will require a bus from the Cancun airport to downtown Cancun, and then a long bus ride to Merida. Friends who live near Boston are taking a flight from Logan to Merida, through Houston (with a 6 hour layover in Houston). But I also see a flight that leaves Logan and goes to Mexico City, where there's about an hour layover to change for a flight directly to Merida. We'd have to go through customs in Mexico City and get to whatever gate for the domestic flight. Has anyone done this? Is an hour enough time? How big is the Mexico int'l airport? Does this seem like a really bad idea?

fra - what type of plane? And was it expensive? We rode the bus from Merida to Cancun and it was quite comfortable, even though it took four hours.
nepheline - can't you take the bus to Merida right from the airport? Or does it not work with your schedule?

Tom 42 - we took the bus directly from the airport last year, but they seem to have eliminated that possibility. You now have to take the bus to Cancun Centro and then the bus to Merida from there. Kind of a pain after all the hours and connecting flights (for us) to get to Cancun.
I've looked into the flights from Cancun to Merida in the past and they were inconveniently timed and pretty costly (for us).
Since my original post, I scrambled and opted for a United flight from MHT to Houston, the 6 hour layover, then a 2 hour flight to Merida. The thought of having to go through customs, etc. etc. with a tight connection in Mexico City was the tipping point.
Thanks to all who offered info/advice.

I think it was wise to not risk the one hr layover in MEX. MEX is a very organized airport but still.
You may want to look at the United connections from BOS to Merida as they have a perfect layover of 2.30 in Houston. This would eliminate the 6 hr layover that you're currently looking at.
Another possibility is flying to Miami and hooking up with the direct flights to MID (Merida). It's a 2 hr flight on Delta.
AA is having some difficulties with flying into MID but they'll be offering some really nice flights from the US to MID for great prices.
As for the ADO bus from CUN aeropuerto to Merida, they still have buses direct from the airport but they've eliminated quite a few of the afternoon ones. Flying into MID is the way to go now that more flights keep popping up.
