I am an American living in Costa Rica for a year or so and would be happy to provide you information. First off, the best guidebook to have for CR is the Moon Handbook. San Jose is not terribly interesting but visit for nature and adventure. There are some very good options for budget travelers and flights from San Jose to the coasts and rain forests are all under $80. Note that driving here is treacherous with very bad roads and few road signs. A woman I know who has lived here for 15 years says that her favorite place is the rainforest in the Osa Peninsula in the remot SE corner of the country. Just wild and untouched. The general advice I have received is to avoid the Caribbean coast except for perhaps the funky town of Cahuita. On the Pacific side, the west coast of the Nicoya Peninsula is very resort like but with pristine beaches. Montezuma and vicinity on the eastern side of the same peninsula sounds wild and rugged with a cool backpacker scene. That is it. Feel free to email me. Have fun!

I am planning on going to Costa Rica this summer to study Spanish via an AmeriSpan program. There are three institutes that I am choosing between - one is in Alajuela, the second is in Escazu and the third in Heredia. I only have short descriptions of these three cities. What more can you tell me about them. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance...
