Zermatt lodging recommendations??
My husband and I are doing a last-minute switching of dates for our trip to Switz this summer- hence we need to re-book a good hotel or inn for Zermtt - any recommendations for an inn or establishment not big on "fancy" but character?

Have you checked the Monte Rosa. My wife and I stayed there in 1998. It was wonderful. We had a phenomenal view of the Matterhorn. Siv's Bar on the ground floor is terrific too. Particularly if Siv is still the bartender. Her Irish Coffee is the best! -Dave- www.CrazyAboutTravel.com
A second for the Monte Rosa. Zermatt hospitality virtually began at this hotel. Very historic, and a fine property.

Rome.Switzerland.Bavaria
www.twenj.com
I second BOB THE NAV's recommendation for Hotel Julen. Beautiful, located in the heart of Zermatt. The best tip I can give you is one that I picked up on this site 2 years ago. To get the best view of the Matterhorn, get up early! The sunrise hits the top of the mountain and works it's way down. We were up at 6 am on our last morning and witnessed a beautiful sunrise. Try this on a morning after a cloudless star-filled evening.

Hi:

I was skiing in Zermatt in 1999. The best "value" hotel I found was at the Hotel Orion. Great hosts, small rooms, very reasonable prices. They are right across the street from their sister hotel Julen. You can use the Julen's facilities, including the fabulous spa!! Do no worry about a Mattahorn view from the hotel. You will be seeing the Mattahorn in your sleep!! You cannot avoid it!! An amazing mountain....even better when you are skiing along side it!
JOHN
