Downtown isn't that big and the train station is far from there, you'll have to take the bus, which is rather annoying to do every day. Your exposure to "natural scenery" will be limited staying in the city.
I find downtown Salzburg itself rather boring and wouldn't stay for more than one day.

Hi Kalpana
Salzburg is a beautiful city; the 'old town' side of the River Salz has a lovely atmosphere, and you can easily spend a day wandering through there.
The 'new town' on the other side of the river has Mirabell Gardens, Mozart House, and plenty of streets with interesting shopping.
Be sure to take the bus (or drive) to Helbrunn Palace, just outside the main town area - you could easily spend a day wandering through the interesting gardens, historical buildings and zoo.
Don't let anyone put you off spending your 3 days there! Di

No, I would not. The primary reason IMO to stay outside the city is to have easy parking for a car.

I agree! I have spent weeks there and hope to spend many more. I prefer to stay across the Salzach from the altstadt personally.

We stayed in a city outside outside of Salzburg because we wound up going during the eruo cup and took the bus everyday and it was really fine. Beautiful outside of the city too. Beautiful in salzburg as well. The only time it was a little hastle was when we left the mozart concert at night but it was easy and safe. By the way, as touristy as it may seem, the mozart concert was one of our favorite memories.

With no car, you would be best to stay in Salzburg instead of traveling to and from via public transport.
SOM tours - much of what is seen on a given tour is the gazebo which is now located at the Hellbrunn Palace (you can take a bus and take a pic outside the gazebo, you're not allowed inside as a drunken visitor danced around and broke a leg); the 'lane where they played in the trees'... the tour tells you that it's somewhere else, but the lane at the Hellbrunn Palace looks the same. The tour takes you onto St. Gilgen for a look at the opening scene of the movie (the Wolfgangsee and mountains) and a stop at a restaurant that they get a kickback from for apple strudel, etc. Then, a short stop in Mondsee for a look at the wedding church used in the movie. Tour winds up back in Salzburg at Mirabell Gardens, but the tour guide doesn't do a tour there... just leaves you off there. It's not a bad tour but with a car you can do it on your own.
They don't take you to really any of the places in Salzburg... you need to find and see those on your own. The church at the abbey is fabulous!

Sorry, I left out that the tour also takes you to the 'lake and the back of the family house'. The 'family' house was actually two different locations... one shot for the front and another for the back w/ the lake. The back w/ the lake now belongs to Harvard, I believe.

So what are the teenagers going to do?
If they resist sightseeing that you want to do, let them stay in the hotel!
I think they might like the salt mine tour in Hallein and the Ice caves in Werfen.
If you can rent bicycles, the cycling is nice. I believe there is a nice trail along the Salzach.

Salzburg is a lovely city, 2 nights is plenty of time to explore if you don't plan to leave and venture out. If you are fans of The Sound of Music, it is fun to do one of the tours from Salzburg, especially one that takes you to St. Gilgen, it also gives a respite from the city. Have a wonderful time.
Logos999 - your comment regarding the river was of no value, perhaps it would have been nice to provide the name of the river in Salzburg since you appear to be a fountain of knowledge.

Spaul - You should be smart enough to figure that out yourself. Google: "Salzburg river". The first result will provide the correct answer. Don't be lazy! You need to do some basic "work" yourself if you're actually interested in a place. Town/river is something anybody should be able to do.
