Winery

We will be spending a week in Tuscany in May and would like to know about any Fodorite experiences with winery tours/tastings, etc. in the Chianti area. Any recommendations?

Scott, I suggest you use the word "Chiantigiana" in the search engine. There are several great posts there that I'm using to plan our trip through Tuscany. Good Luck

We were in Florence & Tuscany and took a day trip to Vignmaggio in Chiant en Greve about 30 minutes outside of Florence. It is a large Villa Estate & Winery where Leonardi di Vinci reportedly painted the Monna Lisa. R It was also the setting for the movie of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing".The Villa's Gardens are beautiful and we purchased some excellent chianti & cabernet franc from their wine tasting room. They did not however have any tours of the actual wine making. They also rent apartments & rooms although we did not stay there.
Reservations a must to go on property. Check www.slowtrav.it.com or www.vignamaggio.com

In August of 2000 we visited the Verrazzano winery. We had a tour of the winery followed by a lunch with some samples of meats and cheeses and wine they make there.
We enjoyed it very much as the host Gino Rossi is very personable.
You can get information from the website. Enjoy.
