We are packing right now for our flight to Paris tomorrow. We will be in Paris for a week, then we take the train to Brienz in the Berner Oberland, for three weeks there. It will be tough to pack light - a 22" suitcase plus a backpack for each of us.

I guess we should really pack for cold weather. Brrrr! I just checked Paris weather and it's in the 30s (farenheit) today. Brienz looks like they had some snow as well, in the 20s & 30s.

Any suggestions from anyone? We have been to Paris numerous times but not during the strikes. We just hope that we can use our prem tickets Paris to Geneva on the 24th of November. This will be a return visit to Brienz. We were there in June this year for a couple of weeks- beautiful time of year.

When we were in southern Bavaria for a few days, in the Mittenwald and Hohenschwangau area, there was six inches of snow on the ground, with snow showers each day. This was October 20-24. The locals were even surprised by how cold it was, and how much snow they had so early in the season.

So we were glad we had our winter coats, hats, and gloves with us, and lots of layers of clothes we could wear. I did use the cold weather as an excuse to buy one of those knit hats with the braids downs the side and the pom-pom on top. It matches one of my dog's winter coats.

And winter doesn't get here for another month!!!

Appalling! I feel my throat closing up.

I live in Ottawa, Canada and I HATE WINTER!

I'm not afraid of a bit of chilly weather. In fact, on November 4, I submerged myself (ie head and entire body dunked -- it doesn't count if you don't dunk your head) in the lake at our country place.

Air temperature -- 8 degrees C. And it was NO BIG DEAL.

But SNOW? I hate the stuff.

Today, my spouse called on a cell phone, mid-afternoon: "Look outside."

Flakes of dandruff were swirling in the air, eddying into little drifts on our deck...

I switched into "rage, rage against the dying of the light" mode. Like: I won't take another year of this.

Fortunately, I am now retired. So Dec 21, we head to NYC (where they think they have winter but they DON'T, not by a long chalk!) then onward by car to Savannah GA for the entire month of January.

Back to Ottawa around Feb. 2-3 to do laundry and pay bills and then March 4 we leave for almost 4 weeks in Paris, Rome and, I guess, Tuscany.

By our return on March 30 there should be NO SNOW and we can "put the water in" at our place in the country.

Who said it would be. It gets interesting below -25C during daytime, when Diesel engines don't work (properly) anymore and railroad switches freeze over. It's been quite a while it's been that cold over here, but those days were fun, esp. because we didn't have to go to school. In much of Canada this is every (winters-)day's business, but here it's not so common.

Tedgale, I hate winter too! Despise it. Detest it. Loathe it. It is cruel and unusual punishment living in northern Canada and I cannot wait to retire somewhere warmer!

When you think about it, it's not easy having snow on the ground continuously for at least six months of the year. It is not easy venturing out into -40 C or colder temps for much of that time. And the wind! It is non stop. Then windchill can get to -65 C as we regularly have winds from 70-90 km/hour. It is downright dangerous, too. It hurts. It's too cold to have fun or enjoy anything. It's just not fair! But it is where both our families are so it is difficult to move at present.

According to the forecast, it's going to warm up in Switzerland next week. We're going skiing today because it might be the last time we'll have enough snow for awhile.

Travel, come to Vancouver, the city of mild temps, ski in the am, golf in the pm. Now, we do get a grey sky or two, and it does rain occasionally, just very occasionally. What am I thinkin'? I'm retiring to Hawaii or Mexico or somewhere without a liquid environment!

Yes - Vancouver climate is ideal for me. It doesn't really get extreme and I LOVE rain. Can't get enough of it. Perhaps that is because I live on the prairies where sometimes rain can be so scarce that you run to the window in anticipation when you see a drop.

We had a light covering on Thursday night last week, but nothing since. And it's gone.

None of the ski centres are open yet.

We're supposed to have some tomorrow, but I'm not counting on it.

I love watching the snow fall, though I'm not as fond of it when I am out and about. What I did hate was the year--I think it was 2004--when we had the same 2 inches of snow on the ground for 5 months.

Usually it warms up enough to melt the snow and then we'll have another snowfall. Eventually that will melt too, but the snowfalls continue. In 2004, the snow fell in November and lasted through March. Cold, cold, cold.

We had a blizzard yesterday and got another 8" of snow. It's not funny when you have a triple car garage driveway and large deck! It was so heavy and wet. Ick!

I am another winter hater. Hate the cold, the wet and the bulky clothes, and the grayness.

It's a family joke now, after almost being here a year, but when I first told my 16-year-old we were leaving CT to move to Zurich she was horrified and replied in a piercing shriek, "SWITZERLAND, Mom??? You don't even like the cold!!!"

Well, lucky us, it was actually warm in Switzerland last year compared to CT...hee, hee.

We've already had snow here - yuck - and I know all you skiiers are not liking me right now so I better sign off before the snowballs start flying in my direction

Schuler hope that FA is right!!

Hi Schuler---no snow here yet. Of course we wouldn't expect it in Seattle, but the nearby mountains don't have enough for skiing yet. (I just checked Crystal Mountain---only 7" at the base). So no opening for Thanksgiving this year.

I believe Whistler up in BC did open on Saturday (Nov. 16).
