Scarlett, my husband read this thread all the way through and I could see the cogs in his brain working overtime. He was licking his chops with all the travel possibilities!!!

And the dear man said When we get back from our trip, we'll have to go on another.

Thank you fellow Fodorites for inspiring DH to break out the passport again and again and again!

Scarlett, if you are still reading, thanks for asking. You all are so amazing. You gave me many great ideas for new destinations.

John, I agree. We do travel, come home, travel again , come home, go for another trip, come home then travel more. For us this the best way to enjoy life. As long as my husband is doing fine we will travel.

Septmeber - Zion Park
October - Paris and Perigord
November - Flagler Beach, FL for family reunin
December - St. John
January - Costa Rica
February - Seatlle for the AAAS meeting
March - Nebraska (I got some wonderful suggestions and help from Tess)

April - I got great help from SusanLynne regarding visit to Cat Island in Bahamas but we still did not decide whether to go to Cat Island in April or Seychelles in May

May or June - Paris and Corsica

July/August - Alaska

After that nothing planned so far. Any suggestions for places to visit in October in Europe with an options to stop for a few days before/after in Paris?

Have fun planning fellow Fodorites
and enjoy every moment of your trips.

Yes, darlin, I am still reading and I will copy this for my dear Yankee to read, hopefully giving him all kinds of ideas!

Didn't I just do this on another thread? Oh well, I must be having a mai tai flashback.

Leaving three weeks from tomorrow to Mosel area (Beilstein), Alsace (Ribeauville),
Switzerland (Montreux and Grindelwald), Italy, (Lugano, Colli di Buggiano, Cinque Terre and fly out of Milano). Now, if I could just get all my work done. Ibetter get off the board to do that!

I'll be in Paris for the week of Thanksgiving. Rented a studio...have made small plans! I feel VERY lucky indeed. A solo trip! I think I have "francophilia"... when I scratch this itch, I'll contract "italiophelio"..then "UKitis"..
whew.. I have to work harder and smarter...

Got back from a first time visit to L.A. two weeks ago. Going to Rome next March with daytrips to Capri and Sorrento. Currently doing a lot of research on this trip and look forward to learning more about this part of the world from you guys.

To travelfan: WOW! Are you in for a treat. My husband and I spent three weeks in Firenze in March this year. I investigated a bunch of language schools for the same reason as you. Didn't get that part done but did enjoy the city so much. I'm not through with it yet. Enjoy.

Scarlett, We are taking a two week cruise in late September. Taking the easy way this time, after so many trips to Italy planned by me for a bunch of friends and family. Starting in Barcelona, stopping along the usual spots along the Coast of Italy, and the to Malta,Corfu, Dubrovnik, Split and the to Venice where we are extending the trip a few days to soak up the atmosphere in our favorite city. Oh boy, Oh boy, can't hardly wait!!

Athens, Paros, Santorini & Crete, leaving for 3 weeks next Tuesday. Can't wait.

DS (Darlin' Sister) and I leave from Seattle in 5 days for Amsterdam and Germany (9/1/03 to 9/19/03):

Cologne (Hotel Harmonie)
Sankt Goar (Hotel Landsknecht)
Beilstein (Hotel Haus Lipmann)
Baden Baden (Badhotel Zum Hirsch)
Meersburg (Gasthof Zum Bären)
Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Gasthof Fraundorfer)
Regensburg (Park Hotel Maximiian)
Bamberg (Hotel Messerschmitt)
Rothenburg (Hotel Eisenhut)
Cologne (enroute to Amsterdam, Dom Hotel)
Amsterdam (Canal House)

We've been planning this trip for months, booking our plane fare in March, nonrefundable. My sis gave us a scare 10 days before our departure date by tearing some ligaments in her "good" knee (her doctor describes both knees as "a mess," but one is decidedly worse than the other.)

We scrambled to try to figure out a way to postpone our departure, but any way we cut it would mean significant expense. So we investigated renting a wheel chair, and the idea really grew on me, since I have terrible feet. We'd take shifts! We imagined the look on people's faces when one of us would say to the other, "Your turn!" and jump out to let the other rest her disfunctional knees/feet a while.

Today, however DD (Darlin' Doctor) gave DS a conditional bill of good health - knees will last at least through this trip, so it's back to pounding the pavement/cobblestones for both of us.

I'm most excited about Amsterdam and the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum. Van Gogh, Vermeer, and all the Dutch Masters, up close and personal!

Sometimes I imagine how great it would be to be able to take lots of trips like this, but the joy in planning and imagining and remembering each trip is so great, I tell myself it's sweeter, savoring each moment and never taking any of it for granted!

September 10 for 10 days: Ireland!! 7th trip there-going with 2 girlfriends this time (my husband is really busy at work right now). Will spend some of the time in Co. Roscommon helping my mom to celebrate her 80th birthday. The rest of the time we'll be in Cashel,
Limerick, Galway and Westport.
My husband usually does the driving over there so it will be a first for me!!

Back to Paris for Thanksgiving to have some fun and retain gold status for another year. ;)

Scarlett Aug 28th, 2003 05:03 AM

Mary Fran,
Whew ~ I am relieved to hear that there won't be two ladies squabbling over a wheelchair somewhere in Amsterdam or Germany :)
How lovely that the two of you get to do these things togethere. It is heartwarming to read of the siblings who enjoy traveling together..a far cry from the younger years, heh?
I can see from this wonderful list of travelers that I have so much traveling to do before I am even close to your class of worldliness ~

Great thread, Scarlett! So, Bluefan, any news yet? Keeping our fingers crossed for you, as well!

hi scarlett,
what a fun thread. i love reading where every one is going!

well, i went to portland earlier this month and enjoyed their gardens and trails.

in november, i'll be going to paris and burgundy.

hopefully next spring, i'll be going to china. we cancelled our trip this past april due to sars. it was disappointing since i've been wanting to see my "mother country" for such a long time. (btw, the trip we took in place of china was a tour around the four corners - way cool! )

happy travels!

Planning a two-week trip for grandson and myself to the Black Forest of southwest Germany. Will be doing family history research in Kusel. I would like to stay in a private home. Any suggestions on how to find them? David
