Have you clicked on your own name lately to see your previous posts. A couple of your very similar questions in the past couple of months have over 20 responses between them. If you have more specific questions about any of those suggestions, it might be better to add a comment on to one of those threads for further comments, rather than starting all over again.
I'm just trying to be helpful.
Personally, my favorite area is Covent Garden, but then I LIVE for the theatre there.

AustinBride - you got some amazingly detailed responses on your other threads. Plus you went to the trouble to give us a lot of detailed info about what you are looking for.
This question is MUCH more general and therefore the responses will be pretty general too.
There are MANY neighborhoods that are safe, hip, trendy, full of shops and restaurants, etc. In fact, almost everywhere is safe and walking distance to transport.

The last two times I stayed in S. Kensington. I agree with Kay95 that it's a great area near the High Streets. It has good tube & bus access & you can walk to a lot of places easily. Plus it's near Harrods!
Prior to S. Kensington I stayed in Bayswater which is ok but I like S.K. better and once I stayed at Russell Square which is safe but I felt it wasn't too central.
Good luck choosing a hotel!

Postcodes ending in 1 are the most central. Kensington is W8, South Ken is SW7. They're not what I'd call central. Belgravia is central peripheral. Mayfair is the most sensible area to stay in. You can walk to Covent Garden, to ALL the shops, to restaurants, etc. etc. That's why I live there.

On a previous trip we stayed in Kensington (Royal Garden Hotel) and found that to be a perfect location - right next to Hyde Park, it was safe and pretty. I don't think you could go wrong in that area or Belgravia.
On our last trip we stayed in the outskirts (past Canary Wharf, and next to the ExCel convention hall - way too far out for our liking (still safe.)
