I love the Dolomites too, but my vote goes to Switzerland. There is just much more choice and the tremendous possibilities afforded by a "hiker's dream transportation system" makes independent hiking stupendously easy. I love being able to hike 9 hours over two passes and being able to easily get back to my hotel/car at the end of the day.

You cannot go wrong by staying in the Interlaken area. So much scenery. So many hiking opportunities. The trails are well marked and offer a wide variety of elevations and difficulties. I deem it the most beautiful area of Europe. Gute reise! Jinx Hoover

Santa Chiara, I also recommend the Berner Oberland, using Grindelwald and Kandersteg or Gstaad as bases. I have hiked the entire Swiss Alps Pass Route as day hikes.

If you are ever in the Luzern area let me know and maybe we can do a hike together, Pilatus? Since my husband is the one working here I'm pretty much free everyday.
