Where to Stay one hour drive out of Frankfurt?

We will be traveling to Europe for the first time. We are flying to Frankfurt and driving to Vienna. We want to stop one hour out of Frankfurt for an overnite stay before continuing to Vienna. Any suggestions what town to stop in?

Wurzburg is a very nice town. Also, you may want to go slightly further and try Rotenburg, a truly magnificent walled city that is virtually intact from Medevil times.

Stay at the Post Hotel in asshaffensburg. It is handy to the airport and one of the best little hotels I have stayed in. They have an exellant dining room and great local wines. I had my first real German beer at the cafe Europa, an experience I will never forget

Frolishe reisen!

Joanne, A lot depends on your route to Vienna ( you will probably see it as Wien on the signs). If you're going Wurzburg-Nurnberg-Linz then Wurzburg is a very nice stop. If you feel you want to push on, Nurnberg is about another two hours, also very nice (try the Nurnbergwurst with horseradish in cream). Enjoy your trip, take lots of film.

Wurzburg and Rothenburg are both great suggestions - but don't overlook Heidelburg - about 55 miles south of the airport - you can stay at the historic (15th century) Hotel Zum Ritter right in the center of town, enjoy the university atmosphere, tour the castle - if you don't stay there upon your arrival, it's also a great place to stay on your last night before departing Europe because you can be to Frankfurt in less than an hour.

Heidelberg is a great place to start your trip but be forewarned hotels are very expensive. Hotel Ritter is the oldest building still standing from a fire in the 16th C. but very expensive. The tourist office has a website.
