We will be in Regensburg for a few days in late May. We are thinking of side trips to Passau and to the Weltenburg monastery. We would love suggestions for another day trip within an hour or two of Regensburg, especially something different or unusual. We have been to Bamberg and to the Munich area. We have slowed down a bit in recent years, so nothing super-athletic, please. We like walking, sitting down and taking in the scenery, history, art, and museums. We plan on using public transportation, so are somewhat limited in that regard. Thanks so much!

I'd look at Amberg. It's less than an hour from Regensburg by train:

In September, we will be visiting Straubing on an overnight drive from Frankfurt to Vienna. There's not much written about it but it looks lovely from their website. It's about a half hour from Regensburg.

Definitely go to Weltenburg. The boat trip from Kelheim along the Danube is fun. In Kelheim itself is the Befreiungshalle ("Hall of Liberation").

Eichstätt in the Altmühl valley would make another nice day trip. I think about 1 1/2 hours to drive there. It has a cathedral, a castle, lots of hiking trails and biking trails.
