Depending on your interests, backpacking through Europe can be a cheaper way for young Americans(assuming .edu) to get around different parts of Europe. There are many fine hostels that offer affordable rates. You just have to decide where you want to go to first. Countries such as Ireland and England are beautiful but are expensive to Americans due to the exchange rate. Countries such as France, Italy, Germany, Belgium etc.. are more affordable due to the strength of the dollar. What is it you want to accomplish...hiking, sightseeing, bike riding etc...

To Carol:
Don't you think your response was a little harsh? I think it was a fair question..a little vague but not deserving of your self important attitude that your time would be wasted be reading a posting like that. If you didn't like it...do us all a favor..don't respond.

Cyart,

Bono gave some great advise...

My advise is:
Internet, internet, internet.

Choose what countries you want to visit and search the internet for the best prices. Go to every link. You never know what deals are 'round the corner'.
Bono's advise of hostels is wonderful. Some cities have Salvation Army hostels (no preaching involved according to people I have talked to) that are a great deal.
Kittie
