Did someone mention Eastenders? Love that show!

Neal Sanders Jul 9th, 1999 04:43 AM

I know I said I swore off limericks, but after seeing Helen's 3:46 p.m. post, I was in awe. Thus, while technically keeping my word.... <BR> <BR>Higgledy piggledy Helen or HellieF <BR>Fodor's best writer, her wisdom's a pearl; <BR>Knows how to use "soi disant" with <BR>Alacrity <BR>What did we do to deserve such a girl? <BR> <BR>and, much weaker... <BR> <BR>Ghostily postily Cosmo G. Topper <BR>Saw Marian, George, and a hound in a fog <BR>Said Cos' to Neal: <BR>"Your name's got appeal <BR>Just don't let some kid think he's named for a dog. <BR> <BR>Oh, Peter Graves was on "Fury." Kirby Grant was "Sky King." <BR> <BR>And it was "The Gayle Storm Show," which followed "The Bob Cummings Show" with Zazu Pitts as "Schultzie."

Spanky Jul 9th, 1999 04:58 AM

Yup..I'm at work too. What about the Ann Sothern (sp) Show? She was the secretary, I think, but she ran the business right? and saved the boss time and time again...like all of us do! see how old TV shows can help you in your life today?

BBBoom Jul 9th, 1999 06:01 AM

(This thread should prob'ly change places w/ice cream thread on USA forum.) <BR> <BR>Spanky: Princess Summerfallwinterspring was much prettier as a human than as the wooden marionette they made her after Judy Tyler (actress) got pregnant. And "Private Secretary" starred Ann Sothern. <BR> <BR>Cheryl et al: "My Little Margie" preceded the Gayle Storm Show. <BR> <BR>1. (5 pts.) What actor on Our Miss Brooks went on to fame on Beverley Hillbillies? <BR> <BR>2. (15 pts.)Who were Asta, Cleo, and Falla? Extra credit to Europeans who get the last one. <BR> <BR>

Judy Jul 9th, 1999 06:09 AM

Surely Ms. Storm spelled her name Gale? <BR>And I can't believe I just went through this whole posting, - or thread, you call them? My thanks to topper, whoever that is! This has been fun! Now back to work.

Helen Jul 9th, 1999 06:11 AM

Neal -- I'm blushing.<BR><BR>David -- thanks for taking the time to put ANZAC Day in context. Hope my earlier posts weren't too flippant. As you can probably tell, I had no idea what the ANZAC posting was about. In any case, thanks to you and others, now I know.<BR><BR>OK, back to work, my boss lurks on this Forum. Hi, mwg!

Spanky Jul 9th, 1999 06:13 AM

Being a dog lover, I can't resist! <BR> <BR>Asta belonged to the Thin Man. <BR>Cleo was a basset hound, but I don't remember who he/she belonged too. <BR>Fala belonged to FDR. <BR> <BR>

cheryl Jul 9th, 1999 06:17 AM

More dog trivia: Asta was also Mr. Smith in "The Awful Truth" (w/Cary Grant & Irene Dunne).

elvira Jul 9th, 1999 06:18 AM

Didn't Ann B Davis play Bob Cummings secretary/assistant (same woman from Brady Bunch)? And wasn't Bob, in real life, one of the first "health nuts", taking dozens of vitamins and extolling the virtues of exercise and good nutrition? Isn't he dead?

martha Jul 9th, 1999 06:25 AM

According to the Dead People Server (dpsinfo.com), Bob Cummings died at the age of 82. Not bad--although I can't help thinking a little gelato and haggis (or haggis gelato) might have kept him going a little longer.

Spanky Jul 9th, 1999 06:26 AM

I thought Ann B Davis was Schultzie! ...or maybe I was getting confused watching too much TV in my childhood. That's why my Dad used to regularly take out the tubes and say that the TV was broken..and then it would remain broken for about 2-3 months until he got another "tube". geez, remember tubes? oops, I guess that's why they call it the "tube".

Neal Sanders Jul 9th, 1999 06:29 AM

Yep, it was Ann B. Davis on The Bob Cummings Show (aka "Love That Bob") and Zazu Pitts on "The Gayle Storm Show." (Remember, this is the same advice giver who mixes up Patras and Napflio, thereby dissuading impressionable travelers from enjoying one of Greece's nicest cities). <BR> <BR>And Bob Cummings is going strong at 93. <BR> <BR>Wasn't Cleo on "Mr. Peepers?"

kay Jul 9th, 1999 06:33 AM

How 'bout this one? It was on in early-mid afternoon on weekdays, so I only was able to watch it when I was sick (which was often in grade school)...called The Big Pay Off. Bess Myerson was the hostess, forget the name of the host. Contestants won a series of ever-nicer sets of clothes, until....ta da...they got a chance to win a mink coat. I LOVED that show! (guilty secret)

Spanky Jul 9th, 1999 06:42 AM

I was partial to Queen for a Day--who had the biggest sob story for the audience meter...win a refrigerator/washer/dryer,etc. for teling your troubles! could have been a forerunner to Jerry Springer, et al.

cheryl Jul 9th, 1999 06:45 AM

Sorry, Neal, but according to the internet movie data base (www.imdb.com), Martha is right. Bob Cummings died in 1990 at the age of 82.

Bob In Heaven Jul 9th, 1999 07:09 AM

Yup, I'm dead OK. But I do read the Fodor's forums. <BR>

BBBoom Jul 9th, 1999 08:17 AM

I think Judy's right re:spelling of Gale Storm's name. Cleo was a Senator's dog on "The People's Choice," and she talked to the camera, with heavy irony. (I think my bassethound Daphne did, too.) Does anyone recognize the closing line, "Elizabeth <BR> <BR>

BBBoom Jul 9th, 1999 08:20 AM

(to continue after rude, jumpy-Netscape interruption) ... <BR> <BR>..."Elizabeth! Aren't you ashamed!?"

elaine Jul 9th, 1999 08:20 AM

I think Cleo the basset hound belonged to the character played by Jackie Cooper on The People's Choice. <BR>But of course I never watched television.

Bob Brown Jul 9th, 1999 08:33 AM

I think Topper lost an Arkansas Hog Calling Contest. So now he(?) is trying to make his voice heard over Internet. <BR>Unfortunately, his written vocabulary is limited to one word. <BR>I am not sure I buy the attention getting interpretation. We don't really know who Topper is do we? Most attention grabbers do not operate incognito or anonymously; they want you to know who they are. I trust his/her/its activity will soon bottom out. <BR>Has anybody discerned a pattern to the activity? I can not figure one. <BR>

Ann Jul 9th, 1999 09:24 AM

Hummmm, I wonder if people on old time TV forums ever get sidetracked into discussions of their favorite vacation destinations??? Just shows how much welled up trivia we all harbor! <BR> <BR>Tony, Helen was correct. I was not insulting you at all, just trying to tie in how Topper could fit into the Europe forum. I'm still anticipating your arrival in Boston when you finally make your long awaited tour of the US! <BR> <BR>I too was begining to think that Winky Dink was a figment of my imagination. NO one else seemed to remember it. I love this forum. <BR> <BR>Oh oh...back to work! <BR> <BR>

Neal Sanders Jul 9th, 1999 09:25 AM

Bob, so is there still a branch of The Varsity drive-in in Athens? The people, possibly including Topper, want to know. <BR>

cherie Jul 9th, 1999 09:36 AM

While you guys are reliving my childhood..It was Nancy Kulp in the Hillbilies. You have not spoken about Beanie & Cecil; I Married Joan, Hazel, though....make me laugh more. This is a relief thread!

Bob Brown Jul 9th, 1999 09:47 AM

For Neal: <BR>The old Varsity that was at College Ave and Broad is no longer there as you surmised. It left us several years ago; the site is now occupied by a Chinese quick spot that specializes in monosodium glutamate. There is a lineal descendant Varsity located at Broad and Milledge. It has, as near as I can tell, the same characteristics as the old down town establishment. It is well off of my path, so I rarely go there. But if you want gourmet food, laden with all that makes Southern cooking infamous, I think you could drop in and easily get your cholesterol and sodium fix. <BR>One burger or hot dog with fries and you should have a 6 month supply. <BR>I think Topper would love their chile-slopped corn dogs with a double load of onion rings topped off with a super large chocolate frostie. <BR>Where else, except in free speeching America, could a thread that started with a nuisance end up talking about one of the finest gourmet eateries this side of the Middle Oconee River? <BR>Now, if we can just keep Topper from eating the stick the corn dog comes on!! <BR>My guess is that his culinary preferences are like those of my son's dog: she eats paper napkins.

elaine Jul 9th, 1999 10:12 AM

cherie, and don't forget, as Natasha might say, moose and squirrel, <BR>Mr Peabody and the Way-Back Machine, <BR>and Edward Everett Horton. <BR>Tony, if you're coming to the US shortly, welcome, bygones are bygones, etc.

re Jul 9th, 1999 10:19 AM

to BBBoom: <BR>I thought Asta was the dog in the series of "Blondie" movies (as in, Blondie the comic strip) <BR> <BR>Am I right? <BR>Probably not.

martha Jul 9th, 1999 10:27 AM

The dog in Blondie is named Daisy.

D.B. Jul 9th, 1999 11:03 AM

All right, since no one has bitten. My Three Sons was called There's always Room for One More, which is the theme song. Da,da..da,da....duh,da,da,da... <BR> <BR>Hazel was the maid who fixed everyone's problems and the character type stolen by the Brady Bunch (Schultzie)... which was was stolen from With Six you Get Eggroll. <BR> <BR>Drizzle,drazzle,drizzle,drone...time for 'zis one to go home. <BR>

cherie Jul 9th, 1999 12:05 PM

uhhhhh...help, Mr. Wizard...I'm falling....

re Jul 9th, 1999 02:27 PM

OOh ooh I got it (I think): <BR>Asta is the dog in "The Thin Man" movies. Right????

April Jul 9th, 1999 07:40 PM

Thanks, folks, for reminding of shows I'd forgotten like Queen for a Day and Hazel. <BR> <BR>And speaking of Mr. Peabody... was Dudley Doright ever on Rocky and Bullwinkle, or was he somewhere else? <BR> <BR>Does anyone, probably in the Seattle area, remember Wunda Wunda? She got to fly on a magic carpet. <BR> <BR>Here's a trivia question for you: what were the names of the Cartwright's (Bonanza) horses? <BR> <BR>

Cheryl Z. Jul 10th, 1999 06:28 PM

<BR>Anybody remember Soupy Sales??

Bob Brown Jul 10th, 1999 06:39 PM

GPTV in the Athens-Atlanta area ran two old Thin Man movies just tonight, with Myrna Loy and Donna Reed. The dog was called Asta. <BR> <BR>And yep, old Soupy could be funny. <BR>Cripes, I remember Captain Kangaroo and Dancing Bear. My son grew up with him. <BR> <BR>For KT: if we are naming classic arias how about O Paradiso from L'Africaine? <BR> <BR>

cherie Jul 12th, 1999 11:42 AM

How come no one's brought up "Green Acres".....I think I've moved to Hooterville.

elvira Jul 12th, 1999 01:03 PM

Asta was the dog in the Thin Man, the movie series starred William Powell as Nick Charles, and Myrna as his lovely wife, Nora. The series was based on the novel by Dashiell Hammett. There was a TV series with the same characters (and wire-haired terrier as Asta): Peter Lawford was Nick, Phyllis Kirk was Nora. Now, does anybody remember ----Mr and Mrs North (---- I think was 'calling') starring Richard Denning as Mr North, but I don't remember who played Mrs...

mustang81 Jul 12th, 1999 03:23 PM

Any one remember "I Lead Three Lives" with Richard????

cherie Jul 12th, 1999 03:29 PM

Anyone remember My Favorite Martian? Ray Walston and Bill Bixby who later went on to do The Courtship of Eddies Father.....What a crush I had on Bixby.

Diane Jul 12th, 1999 03:40 PM

3sons song: chopsticks <BR>Everyone has mentioned lots of my favorites. My parents let me stay up to watch Steve Allen with Don Knotts, Louis Nye and Alan Poston? Doing man on the street interviews. Also Jose Jimenez (Bill Dana). <BR>Did anyone else watch Super Circus on Sunday afternoons? Mary Heartline, and that strange clown who pulled sausages, various fruits and vegetables out of his pockets.....

s.fowler Jul 13th, 1999 07:40 AM

Geez gang... a girl flies off to Skopje, Macedonia and look what happens! I don't have much time here for reading... just keep "topping" until I get back on the 2nd of August :) <BR> <BR>P.S. Everything is fine, if HOT. Our conference is going well and right next to the KFOR Press office so I'm meeting people from all over Europe:)

cherie Jul 13th, 1999 11:22 AM

My folks used to let me stay up to watch Ed Sullivan (really big shoe...)so I could see Topo Gigio....of course Elvis & the Beatles weren't bad acts, either....The first COLOR show I saw was (gross, I know)Lawrence Welk on a neighbors color TV Set....
