Erin- My video store has the uncolorized version of Topper, but that doesn't help you, sorry.

I missed the reference to the 12th man, can somebody share? The last man I know about is the Third Man, how did we get to 12, and what happened to the ones in between? Is this a boomer thing?

It seems like there are some movie buffs after my own heart here. On the "make it up" thread a few weeks ago, I almost asked if Karl Marx was buried in Fredonia, but was afraid no one would get the reference. Boy was I wrong!
|
Cheryl, we got to the 12th man (I presume this is right, Richard?) by looking at my email address. Since you are at Harvard, Cheryl, and far far away from my own university (right now, anyway, back in grad days I too was at Harvard, but ah, I digress) I will give you a hint....it has to do with "tamu's"
football team. Also, Cheryl, I was the one on the making it up thread who threw in the wrong stuff about where Karl Marx was buried. Have to confess that I wouldn't have gotten the Fredonia reference. Gee, this is fun...like following clues in a mystery.
|
Oops, that was a typo. I meant to say "Freedonia".
|
Hail, hail, Freedonia!
Need more clues on the 12th man thing--my college didn't even have a football team and was nowhere near Boston.
|
Was Winky Dink a little kid cartoon who drew on the tv screen, and you put up a piece of clear plastic on the tv screen and drew along with him?

And I directly attribute my uncontrolled love of scifi/space adventures to Captain Midnight and Flash Gordon.

|
How about Rin Tin Tin? I watched it only once because in a shot from what must have been under the dog's chin I could see an airplane moving across the sky. I was only about 8 and became disillusioned...
|
Well...
Whirlybirds
Sky King
Highway Patrol
The Mounties ?
Combat
The Rat Patrol
My Friend Flicka
Fury
Lassie
Rin-tin Tin
The Real McCoys
Kukla, et. al.
Romper Room

Trivia: What was the original title of My Three Sons (hint, it's the theme song).
|
Martha- Well done on Freedonia! And they say women don't like those movies!

Kay- Freedonia is the mythical country in the Marx Brother's Duck Soup.

I looked up the football team and it's the Aggie's, but I still don't get the reference.
|
AJ, thank you yah rotten kid for giving me those unforgettable Paladin lyrics. Your brother is a sadist, isn't he? Hard to explain to the boss why I suddenly threw my head down on my desk and folded my arms over my head, my whole body wracked with hysterical laughter. I will never see Richard Boone the same way again....
|
Keeping with the dog theme (see Lassie and Rin Tin Tin above), TAMU has Reveille, we have Bevo (much easier to spell).
|
Cheryl, good goin'. The Texas Aggies have a time hallowed tradition, starting way back in 1922, that has enshrined the Twelfth Man in sacred memories forever. In honor of him, the student body stands throughout all Texas Aggie football games. If you want to learn more about this tradition, check out
http://corps.tamu.edu/corpscenter/tr...s/12thman.html
The Twelfth Man now refers to any Aggie in the football stands, because the support is so immense that it helps the team win, as the original Twelfth Man did. Now, are you sorry/glad you asked?!?
|
Oh Richard, you are a pretty nice guy, for a tea-sip. Now do you want to explain about that one? :)
|
Kay, I thought I was the only person who remembered Winky Dink and you. I really thought it was funny when some kids forgot to use the plastic screen and drew directly on their tv screens! I guess that's why the show didn't last very long!

I would have thought that Topper qualified for Tony in the European forum. Wasn't Topper always played by a British actor?

And, not only do I remember Spin and Marty, I met them at Disneyland when I was about 7 years old!
|
Elvira-

I just tried to e-mail you a file with the Ballad of Paladin, but it didn't go through, sorry. I loved the image of you hysterical, and thought it might be even better if you could hear the song!
|
A feeble attempt to keep with 'dog theme'...'Old Yeller'...now that is a classic.
What was the show that always had 'quicksand'...show was set in a jungle. And since I love baton twirling, does anyone remember Mary Hartline from 'The Big Top'?
I must close as I need to get a life. Have to run, Ted Turner is on speaker phone...he's mentioning something about Fodorites/Topper/soon to be a mini-series.
|
Kay, I really do have to get back to the (literal) drawing board. Reveille was meant as a clue. I'm a Yankee, but my kids are UT grads. Keep the aTm bonfires burning.
|
Sergeant Preston of the Yukon, with his faithful dog, Skunk.

and anyway, whyaduck?
|
Wasn't it Robert Sterling that played Mr. Kirby on Topper. And Yes, "topper" is not only being misleading but as said above wasting peoples time and causing topics to go unanswered. You would think they would have something better to do!!!
|
hmm I lost the thread of this conversation about 70 or 80 posts ago ...I suppose it would mean something to me if I was a *middle-aged* American?

Ilisa, Hanna Barbera ruined Scooby Doo by introducing a new character, Scrappy Doo, into the show. Often a sign that a show is flagging, the addition of a new character was supposed to open up loads more storylines for the gang. Load of nonsense nowadays...

regards
|
You sad, sad people. Tony, maybe we should start the UK version of this thread?

ANZAC day is to do with Gallipoli when the corps was wiped out in Turkey in the Great War. A Scottish singer/songwriter who now lives in Australia wrote a very famuos song about it called "The Band played Waltzing Matilda"

At least it's famous here...tho' probably not so famous as "Skippy, the Bush Kangaroo"
|
Thanks, Sheila, for putting it together for we uninformed. BTW, I have heard that song -- we do have folkie radio stations over here. What's that singer's name? Is it the same guy who wrote "Streets of London?" I used to love that song, in my less-cynical days.
|
Robert Sterling! Brava, Mary Ann (how's the Professor? sorry sorry I just had to)

Tony and Sheila: ah come on, you young whippersnappers, you MUST have tv shows from your-not-so-distant past that bring a tear to your eye and a gag to your throat! Share!! Share!! LOOK UP IN THE SKY IT'S A BIRD...
|
Ann, please don't start banding my name about as a suspect for Topper ...I get enough bad press on this forum as it is. Next thing you know they will be reopening the Ripper case and grilling me about it.

I usually have too much to say, as opposed to just exclamation marks.

regards
|
Tony- I don't think Ann was trying to finger you as the culprit. Her statement was kind of cryptic, though. I think she was asserting that it was appropriate for us to discuss an American TV show here, because the nationality of the central character qualifies for the Europe forum. At least, that's how I read it. And I don't think you need to defend yourself, anyway -- dumbass !!! is not your style.
|
Helen, It's not the same guy. Tom Paxton wrote "Streets of London" and Eric Bogle wrote "The band Played Waltzing Matilda"

Of course we have TV memories of our own, but, since you don't share them. it would bore you if we went over them here.

It will probably appall Tony to know that only on Sunday evening, in the prsence of apparently sane adults I watched a video with episodes of "The Woodentops" "Rag, tag and Bobtail", "Bill and Ben" and "Andy Pandy" for two reasons..One was to see if Teddy really did get in that hamper with Looby loo for nefarious purposes; and the other was to ascertain if the wifie at the start said "Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin" or "then I will begin".

And I called you sad????
|
Streets of London: Ralph MacTell
And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda: Eric Bogle
My Job: Who cares about that? I'm too busy with trivia on Fodor's
|
Job, schmob, work is overrated. However our server keeps crashing, I'm getting tired of retyping these posts. When I left this yesterday there were aabout 5 posts. Wonder when the madness will end. To the top once more, good night all, and to that pathetic weasel Topper, I know who you are, cut it out!
|
Sheila, I dont wish to be rude, but I have only heard of those programmes because my mum and dad tak about them sometimes. You see them going misty-eyed for a second and then snapping back to the real world and looking around the room in a sort of 'where am I ' moment.

I was/am a child of the 1970's and it was more or less cartoons by then. Notable exceptions that I now have on video are 'The Herbs' featuring Parsley the Lion and, The Clangers and its 'Smallfilms (TM)' companion, Bagpuss.
|
I knew that would happen, Helen and it's all your fault. See I'm not aa old as some of you guys, but who cancompete with "the Clangers"?

I also knew that Ralph McTell wrote "Streets of London". Tom Paxton just sang it. Humiliation again!!!

(For cross-reference see US Forum)

I Can't believe this thread. I'm going to find my own personal Soup Dragon. Good night
|
I leave the forum for a minute -
I come back, and you're all in it! :)

You make me think of old Howdy Doody,
And then Pinky Lee and Molly Bee.

And now unfortunately, it's back to the top-it!
|
Ann, Kay: One of the great disappointments in my life was when the mailman brought my long awaited "Winky Dink" kit. I had worked extra chores and babysat in order to save the money to send away for it. It finally came in the mail...the day before the show was canceled! I never got to decode Winky Dink's secret messages.
|
Ohmygod, finally other people who remember Winky-Dink. For the longest time I was beginning to think maybe I had only imagined there was such a show, since none of my friends could remember it and my husband only said that the title sounded vaguely familiar. And here I had all these memories of sticking my little plastic sheet on the set, drawing ladders, etc. to help him out of dangerous situations. Oh what fun! Now, does anyone remember the lyrics to its theme song after, "Winky-Dink and you, Winky-Dink and me . . ." This has been bugging me off and on for, oh about 30 years now or so.
|
Was Sky King Peter Graves?! Really?!
|
1. I'll bet nobody remembers this show but I'll throw it out there anyway. Does anybody recall a weekly TV show from back in the late '50's, maybe early 60's, probably American - maybe set in New York, having something to do with a couple of women and an ocean liner? I seem to remember the ship being in the opening scene. I've always wondered what the name of that show was.

2. Are most of you really writing from work?

3. The trouble with discussing Coronation Street is that here in Canada we're a month or two or three behind Britain. Anyway, I'm still miffed that they killed off Derek.
|
April - that was the Gayle (Gail?) Storm show, I think. Kind of an old "Love Boat". I loved it! There was another sitcom with her and her dad too, that one reminded me of early version of "That Girl".
|
Cheryl Z.
OH MY GAWD! That's it! I can't believe someone came back with an answer so fast. I've been wondering about that show for years and years. I think I liked it because of the travel connection.

Thanks a million. Wait 'til I tell my Mom...
|
ANZAC day is the 25th of April. It is a day when Australia and New Zealand remember their men who died in both the world wars as well as Korea and Vietnam since.
Helen...Turkey is related to ANZAC day because as Dave said, its about the Gallipoli campaign of WW1. It is where thousands and thousands of young Australian and New Zealand men died. The site in Turkey has become part of a very very emotional pilgrimage for many of us.
The day, April 25, in this part of the world is highly emotional, even moreso now, as there are ony 3 surviving ANZACS. As you can appreciate these men are now over 100 years old.
I don't want to get too heavy on what is a great thread, but I hope I have conveyed how deeply Australians and New Zealanders feel about this day and why many of us feel drawn to spend that day at the site of what was a massacre, in Turkey.
|
yup, the whole ball of wax...that's what i remember...winky dink and you (no wonder it didn't last long, all those kids messing up the screens of their precious new tv sets), the gail storm show, topper....amd how about the millionaire?!? I loved that one. a million dollars given out by john bairs fertippton, or something like that. maybe we should call this thread the baby boomer trivia one....plus coronation street and a memorial to anzac.
|
Gail Storm...was it My Little Margie??? Peter Graves didn't play Sky King but give me a while and it will come to me. The Sky King actor was killed in a car accident in Florida some time ago
|
boy, you ignore a thread for a while, and look how interesting it gets!

Was Sky King played by Kirby somebody, maybe Grant, but I could be completely off base--those of us old enough to remember that show at all are bound to become a little forgetful.
