AJ Jul 8th, 1999 09:59 AM

I remember Sky King - watched it every Saturday morning, right after "Fury", the one about the black horse.

elvira Jul 8th, 1999 10:09 AM

Martha, I would imagine that the mouth-breathing dweeb probably has no clue, as evidenced by his ability to hit only the first key on his keyboard. I can only offer a thank you prayer to God that he's not mine...

Martha B Jul 8th, 1999 10:13 AM

"And if you find yourself in that nostalgic rage, just jump right up, and show your age!"-- J. Buffet <BR> <BR>I free-associated that from Sky King's Penny, but it seems apropos.

Helen Jul 8th, 1999 10:14 AM

Fury! I had forgotten that one. (Probably for a good reason.) I think I was around 8. I had a knit winter hat with a long, woolen braid on top, which I would cause to whirl around while announcing, "Skyyyy Kiiing!" I thought it was hilarious. BTW, I think the !-person is obsesses with the letter Z. I noticed a cluster of three postings on Ibiza and one on Anzac Day. And just what the heck is Anzac Day, anyway?

Richard Jul 8th, 1999 10:25 AM

Helen, Anzac is an acronym for Australia New Zealand Army Corps.

Buffalo Bob Smith Jul 8th, 1999 10:29 AM

Yes, it was indeed Sky King, and who can forget Spin and Marty? <BR>

elvira Jul 8th, 1999 10:31 AM

Ok, Spin and Marty, isn't Anzac Day in honor of my mother's sister, Zac? Or is it the Turkish version of a popular mood alterer?

Helen Jul 8th, 1999 10:32 AM

So why is there Anzac Day in Turkey?

Helen Jul 8th, 1999 10:35 AM

Yeah, Elvira, for the people who are against Prozac. BUT WHY IS IT IN TURKEY?????

Elsa Jul 8th, 1999 10:35 AM

You can usually guess when "Topper" has been "at work" again because if you notice on the left side of the Forum the posts will show responses about 1 min. apart. <BR> <BR>For example:#6 Just returned from 5 wks <BR> in France 7-8(13:03) <BR> <BR> #7 Still need to know about <BR> oxygen 7-8(13:02) <BR> <BR>And so on and so forth. If you see this sequence, he/she has been at it again.

Richard Jul 8th, 1999 10:39 AM

Since this has turned into such a free-wheeling post, who was Kukla, who was Fran and who was Ollie? Bonus point, who was Burr? Aha! Hopalong Cassidy's horse, yeah, that's the ticket.

Dave Jul 8th, 1999 10:40 AM

Just a hesitant guess, but is ANZAC day in Turkey related to the Gallipoli campaign of WWI?

martha Jul 8th, 1999 10:50 AM

Fan was the human, Ollie had the tooth, and Kukla was the little guy.

elvira Jul 8th, 1999 10:53 AM

Kukla was the gator/dragon puppet, Ollie was the round-headed puppet, and Fran was Fran Allison, the live one. Burr Tillstrom invented the whole thing. <BR> <BR>Topper....oooo a wise guy nyuk nyuk nyuk

KT Jul 8th, 1999 10:54 AM

Ollie the snaggle-toothed dragon puppet (I loved him so much -- I think it was because he needed orthodontia just like I did.) Kukla his clown-like buddy puppet. Fran their human friend. Burr (Tillstrom) the puppeteer. <BR> <BR>Why is does Anzac day have to do with Turkey? Simple: Turkey contains tryptophane (sp?) a calming amino acid. So theres the connection: Turkey-tryptophane-Prozac-Anzac. (Okay, well, Gallipoli might have something to do with it. Anybody want to start a Mel Gibson thread?) <BR> <BR>Philosophical question: Is it possible to be off-topic in a thread that has no topic? <BR> <BR>

elvira Jul 8th, 1999 10:55 AM

My post came after yours, Martha, and you are right. Ollie (as in olligator, maybe?) was the snaggle toothed dragon. <BR>N E S T L E S Nestle's makes the very best..........?

Dave Jul 8th, 1999 10:57 AM

I must confess I never had much truck with Kukla, Fran and Ollie. Back in Indiana when I was growing up "Cowboy Bob's Corral" was my favorite morning show. What could be better than a singing sourdough biscuit? <BR> <BR>I'm afraid I've REALLY offended Tony now, since tv shows don't get much more local than this!

Helen Jul 8th, 1999 10:59 AM

Farfel? Is that you?

KT Jul 8th, 1999 11:02 AM

Elvira: Why, it's Farfel the dog's song! A classic right up there with "O Mio Babbino Caro" or "Nessun Dorma."

ca y'est Jul 8th, 1999 11:05 AM

Apparently, there are several Europeans with little to do in the evenings and a several Americans in early afternoon also with time on their hands. Can we deduce from his/her topping times anything about Topper's locale? The answer will be printed upside down on the side panel of a box of Sugar Jets.

elvira Jul 8th, 1999 11:10 AM

Hey kids what time is it? <BR> <BR>Oh Poncho... <BR> <BR>And why DID Tonto always go into town for supplies, when he knew he'd get the snot beat out of him?

Erin Jul 8th, 1999 11:15 AM

Does anyone know if the original version of Topper still exists? Everytime I go to videos stores (or it comes on TV) it's the hideous colorized version. Ted Turner is an idiot.

Spanky Jul 8th, 1999 11:15 AM

Did you think Princess Summer Winter Spring Fall was pretty? <BR>

Richard Jul 8th, 1999 11:22 AM

OK, here's the straight skinny. "topper" is a retired actor, whose career consisted of playing the rear end of Hopalong Cassidy's horse, a role at which he still excels.

Kay Jul 8th, 1999 11:24 AM

Geesh, what fun. Talk about free associations.....I loved Topper, Sky King and Fury, too. Had totally forgotten about Fury, so thanks. Anyone remember Winkie Dink and You? <BR> <BR>Now, please someone have the answer to this one...it is driving me crazy....Am I the only one who remembers a radio program in the (early, I think) fifties called the Big John and Sparky Show? The theme song was Teddy Bears Picnic. I can't find anything about that show, even anywhere on the web. Help!

Spanky Jul 8th, 1999 11:28 AM

Sparky! Teddy Bears Picnic...wow. I listened to that radio program every Saturday morning. I lived in Racine Wisconsin at the time and thought the program originated in Chicago.

Kay Jul 8th, 1999 11:32 AM

Thank you, so I am not crazy. I lived in Kansas then so the show must've been syndicated or on a network. I wonder whose, and then I could really track it down.

Richard Jul 8th, 1999 11:34 AM

Thanks, I'll be humming that to myself for the next week, however when YOU go out to the woods today, lookout for the 12th man. Here's one for you: <BR>

elvira Jul 8th, 1999 11:37 AM

Princess SummerFallWinterSpring was certainly more attractive than Sid Melton (ovaltine reference here) <BR> <BR>Do you think Ted Turner will colorize Schindler's List?

martha Jul 8th, 1999 11:38 AM

You can buy tapes of "Big Jon and Sparkie" broadcasts at www.crabapplesound.com. <BR> <BR>Maybe we can all have a sleepover, with haggis-in-a-tube (TM) for breakfast.

Neal Sanders Jul 8th, 1999 11:39 AM

"From out of the blue of the western sky comes... Skyyyyyyy King!" <BR> <BR>"Fury.... the story of a horse... and the boy who loved him (her?)." <BR> <BR>"Plunk you magic twanger, Froggy." (Annakabanna) <BR> <BR>And I never saw Peter Graves put his hands anywhere they shouldn't have been when he was around Penny. <BR> <BR>With that, I'm going to write a business plan. <BR>

Richard Jul 8th, 1999 11:45 AM

Sorry for all the repeats, I still don't have the mastery of this keyboard. Arrigato.

Helen Jul 8th, 1999 11:46 AM

A doofus, the soi-disant Topper,<BR>Wanted postings in their order proper.<BR>We digressive buffoons,<BR>Started laughing 'bout 'toons,<BR>And a late 50's show with a chopper.

cheryl Jul 8th, 1999 11:46 AM

Thanks, guys. As if it's not bad enough that I'm wasting my time at work reading Fodor's, now I'm humming old TV theme songs as well. For some reason, (free association again), I'm onto the Paladin theme song. That's after many repetitions of the Teddy Bear's Picnic. You all have a lot to answer for, these shows are way before my time!

Kay Jul 8th, 1999 11:48 AM

Martha, thanks, I will hop right over to crabapple.com right now....and Richard, I wonder if anyone besides you and me caught the 12th man refernce, and why! <BR> <BR>I notice a lot of us boomers on this thread. Yeah!

AJ Jul 8th, 1999 11:51 AM

Erin, none of the old Topper movies or TV shows are in VHS production, although there are a few copies being auctioned. I noticed a b/w copy of Cary Grant's original Topper is being auctioned on EBAY as we speak, will close in one hour, current bid $31, hurry! <BR> <BR>Cheryl, "Paladin, Paladin, where do you roam? I'm in the bathroom so leave me alone." My big brother swore to me that those are the real words.
