What's the difference between 1st class and 2nd class on the train between Paris and Rome?
We're planning on taking the train from Paris to Rome and the difference between 1st class and 2nd class is $261 vs. $176. What advantage is there to pay the extra fare? Thanks in advance to all Fodorites. This has been the best site for planning our trip. Books are great for getting ideas but firming up the itinerary has been easy through comments found here.

Hi Maggi,

If the train from Paris to Rome is typical of most trains, then the difference isn't much. There will be fewer seats in 1st class than 2nd class. The 1st class seats may have slightly more comfortable seats, but again, not much of a difference (but it possibly could make a difference on a LONG ride). I personally would save the $85/pp (don't know how many are in your group) and use that money for dining and other things. I travel on a budget and will save where I can to enjoy other things. Maybe other fodorites can give their opinion. Have a great trip! Monica
For a long haul, I'd definitely pop for the first class seat; more comfortable, and not nearly as crowded (2nd class can be jam-packed with tourists during the season).

If you are taking the night train, you'll want the sleeper (2-person cabin) if there are just the two of you; then a first-class seat for the rest of the trip.

I will be taking the Venice-Paris trip this fall, and always travel 2nd class - but not on this one.

My wife and I have travelled on French trains for years. It is an extremely reliable and comfortable way to travel. We have always found it worth the extra francs to take first class. It is less crowded and the seats are definitely more comfortable. It WILL make a difference on as long a ride as you have planned. I imagine that you are going via Lyons and will be taking the TGV. We have travelled the TGV less frequently and can't comment for sure there.
