What to do in Rome on Christmas Day?
My husband and I will be arriving in Rome on Christmas Day morning and will only have 2 full days in Rome. We want to make the most out of the short time we will be there. What do you think will be open? Any suggestions? Thanks.

If you can make it to the Vatican by noon, you can catch the Pope's Christmas blessing to the crowd gathered in St. Peter's Square. No tickets necessary. The Forum will probably be open and possibly the Collosium. Walk around the centro storico seeing the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon and Piazza Navona. Peek into any churches you find open as there are amazing works of art in each one.

Hi HBS, we'll also be in Rome over Christmas. We plan on just riding the buses and strolling around to see the innumerable public sites. When we first found out that most everything is "closed" on Christmas, we were a bit disappointed, then we realized that there are so many public areas (fountains, plazas, etc.) that do not require an "admittance". I think you could spend days just trying to take in all of these places.

While it is all in Italian, look to the right side of the page and download the pdf bus maps of Rome (Citta-City, Central and Notturna-Night). We zoomed in to the areas we are interested in and have plotted out our possible routes. Be sure to get the night route one, as I understand the normal bus service stops in the afternoon on Christmas.

I haven't been to Rome on Christmas day, but I agree with the above; part of the fun of being in Rome is simply strolling the city and stumbling into various piazzas. Its a great walking city.
Most of the churches are beyond gorgeous. I too would suggest mass, if anything just to take in the atmosphere.
