Like everybody else, there are a number of them for me, & they are all memorable, but by far & away for me: <BR>1. The view from on top of Calton Hill, in Edinburgh, at dawn with nobody else up there but me, overlooking the Firth of Forth & the city of Edinburgh. <BR>2.Views from the train going from Munich to Salzburg. <BR>3.View from top of the Castle in Salzburg.

Notre Dame de Paris, in the mist just after sunrise. <BR>Standing on Omaha Beach, looking at the looong stretch of beach, and then up up at the German bunkers. <BR>Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, looking straight down into a very angry sea. <BR>My sister's face as she watched a French soap opera, understanding nothing of the French language, but completely grasping what was going on. <BR> <BR>

Tme most memorable view I experienced when traveling in Europe was the driving through the rows of plain trees on the outskirts of St. Remy in Provence. Another, was in the Luberon in late June, viewing the patches of lavender in bloom from on high. <BR> <BR>Provence is a marvelous place.

Sailing through the Bosphorus on a sparkling July day with Istanbul on either side in incredibly blue water. This was before the bridges and freeways were built. The suburbs were little villages dotted along the coast, each with its ferry landing and most with an outdoor cafe or restaurant at the water's edge. Farther north were the incredible Victorian summer houses built right on the water. Sadly, that night a section of waterfront burned in the most horrifying and spectacular fire I've ever seen-reflected in the water on a black night. Unforgettable.

Great question: <BR>1) Getting off the train in Venice and walking out to the Grand Canal.. nothing I had experienced prepared me for the awe I felt. <BR>2) The sunset from private Balcony at the Loucas hotel on Santorini... unbelievable... we could hear opera being played by someone along the Caldera and it brought tears to my eyes. <BR>3) The first time my husband and I went to Paris together, I had booked a hotel which boasted a "panoramic view" of Paris (Hotel Regynt's Montmatre) we rushed to the window, opened the blinds and looked out just as the lights on the Eiffel Tower came on!

I know "most" memorable would mean just one, but these are all "most" for different reasons... <BR>The tiny ancient monk's cemetery behind a church somewhere off of Nevsky Prospekt in (then) Leningrad, and Piskarevskoye cemetery (do we have a trend here?) and St. Basil's in Moscow, of course. <BR>

Duh. That was just the beginning. <BR>David in Florence and the fields of sunflowers and the glow of the red rooftops. <BR>The gardens of the Alhambra (but that's more than view, that's all the senses.) <BR>Thorvald and the view from the top of Skogafoss (and, really, just about anywhere in the country on a clear day!) in Iceland. <BR>The flowers and the snow in June along the Alpine trails of Switzerland. <BR>And so much more. <BR>

Great thread! <BR>Two that come to mind first <BR>Coming around the corner from the metro in Paris and seeing Notre Dame for the first time. Gray sky, ominious clouds, no crowd, pretty great! <BR>My first morning in the Irish countryside, I woke very early to a full moon and spectacular sunrise hapening at the same time. Amazing!

For me, the most memorable view in Europe was when taking the water taxi from the Marco Polo (Venice) airport on the mainland. As we crossed the lagoon towards Venice, it seemed as though the city was rising from the waters. Then we dove between the buildings, slipping rapidly through a secondary canal, and swung out into the Grand Canal. An extraordinary succession of images!

What a great question! <BR> <BR>The one's that spring to mind are the following: (in no particular order) <BR> <BR>The Parthenon in Athens <BR> <BR>The Berlin Wall <BR> <BR>The Valley of the King's (not quite Europe, I know but there are one or two other postings that have nothing to do with Europe) <BR> <BR>The Eiffel Tower <BR> <BR>but the best of all is one that I have lived with all my life and that is the view from the south bank of the Thames looking towards Westminster and St. Pauls. It is a sight that sends shivers through my body everytime I see it. It truely is one of the best man made views in the world! <BR> <BR>London is the best city in the world! (o.k., so I'm biased, I admit it!!!) <BR> <BR>

1. Venice (it was like a dream) <BR>2. St. Charles Bridge in Prague <BR>3. The fog creeping over the Tuscan hills from the view high atop the tall tower in San G. <BR>4. One of my favorite places was to just stand on the Ponte S. Angelo or Emanuelle and gaze across the Tiber toward St. Peter’s at dusk.

The one hour walk uphill in Grenada to find the church of St. Nicholas was entirely worth it! From the church balcony, the view of the Alhambra at sunset with the snowcapped mountains in the background was the most amazing I have seen!

The view of Venice from the top deck of a cruise ship as you pass through the lagoon in front of San Marco Square. It's like being in a slow moving helicopter looking at the most beautiful part of the city.

the view from Mount Urgull in San Sebastian leaves a lasting impression.
