What is the most memorable view you have seen when u travel to Europe?
I think the most gorgous and memorable view for me was over-looking the entire swiss alps from the plane.
|
First is best I suppose. The first glimpse of the Colosseum with Rome as the backdrop brought tears to my eyes as we approached the city on the bus. (Yes, it's been a while ago!)

I would try posting a humorous answer to this question, but as I am under orders to cool it, I will wait util a few more people have weighed in.
My first view of the Duomo in Florence from the Piazalle Michelangelo.

Or maybe the Florentine hills from the back edge of the Boboli Gardens. Also the sea view from the terrace of a restaurant in the Cinque Terre, and from the balcony of my pensione in Siena. Those terraced hillsides get me every time....
|
Here are a few:

1) View of Venice as you exit the train station and see the colorful buildings and canals for the first time.

2) Landing at the Cote D'Azur airport in Nice and seeing the gorgeous shade of the water and the beauty of the mountains surrounding it.

3) The Norwegian fjords.

Rex, if you have nothing to say, it's not necessary to say you have nothing to say ... which in fact is saying something eventhough you have nothing to say.

If you have nothing to say, say nothing. Participants in this forum are not breathlessly awaiting your answer to each and every question. Strange I know, but true.

Walking across Troitskiy Bridge in St. Petersburg......views of the Palace Embankment, Hermitage and Winter Palace on the Neva River. I will return this fall.
|
The view from a campground on a Norwegian fjord in the early morning, The Acropolis at sundown when the Parthenon is lit up with their light show, St Basils Cathedral at night, Segovia castle for the first time.
|
I read the above responses and have seen many of the same views. I guess the only input I can have is that you go to Europe to discover your own views. Don't try to duplicate someone else's views. It is not going to happen. Your great view will come when you are least expecting it and it won't necessarily be of some famous spot at sundown. Most of mine have been in places people have never heard of and that were not covered with tourists. Go, seek, find your own. They will always be better.

It was so many years ago now (No, I am not going to tell you how many) as the plane approached Heathrow. Beneath me was a castle. Of course, it was Windsor, but I didn't know what it was then. It was my first trip to Europe. After years of waiting, I was finally in Europe. I couldn't believe it!

Of course, I've been back a few times since, but I still can remember flying over Windsor for the first time.
|
It was right after that whole Divine Brown thing. I flew back to London, and Elizabeth was there at the airport to meet me. She was a sight for sore eyes.

Oh, how in heaven have I let this woman slip out of my life?!
|
Lauren: Its funny that u have mentioned about the castle because when my plane was leaving heathrow, I saw the castle beneath and was wondering if it was one of the famous castle in London, which I have never been to....I guess I finally know which castle it was...thx!

The Geiranger fjord from our hotel room in Norway.
|
Among my favorites: 1. Mt. Etna viewed from the Greek theater in Taormina, 2. the ruins and olive trees at Delphi seen from a hill slightly above, 3. view of the morning mist rising out of the valley below Cortona, 4. the back views of York seen from the wall.

But my real favorite: the view of the surrounding hills and towns seen from the little Sicilian hilltown of San Salvatore di Fitalia in the Nebrodi Mts.
|
I think I have a 4 way tie for first place: the view of the Grosser Aletschgletcher from the Jungfraujoch, the Matterhorn, the whole Berner Oberland wall from the Faulhorn, and the Dom rising about 9,000 feet above Saas Grund.
There is another memorable view that was not of Europe, but made possible because we had been in Europe. We were headed home from Amsterdam when I suddenly realized that we must be over Greenland. A crew member confirmed it; we were.
|
Gosh, there were so many. I guess my favorites were:
1. The Coliseum in Rome
2. Venice
3. The alps rising out of the lake in Lake Lugano.
4. Neuschwanstein.
Not in Europe but the most breathtaking was standing in a Giant Sequoa grove.
|
Art, our tastes are similar. A walk through anywhere on the "upper campus" of US Santa Cruz is totally amazing - - carved quite literally out of thousand of acres of giant redwoods. The most amazing college campus on earth.
|
Most memorable view:
1. The waterfall at Lauterbrennan in the Alps as you approach on the train from Interlaken.
2. The chimneys as far as the eye could see at Birkenau Concentration Camp near Krakow, each 2 represented a barrack of people.
3. Brandenburg Gate in the heart of Berlin, remembering the celebration I saw on tv as the wall came down.
4. The David in Florence--amazing.
5. The view from the Charles Bridge in Prague.
|
That first view of the Acropolis from our taxi on the way into Athens from the airport way back in 1987. It was my first port of call in Europe after years of studying ancient history and archaeology at uni. I can remember it like it was yesterday.
|
This is so typical, I guess, but my first view of the Eiffel Tower, at night, from along the Seine. I could not believe that what I was seeing was THE Eiffel Tower--it looked so much more beautiful "in person" than I had ever imagined. Instant love. An image emblazoned in my memory. A big Tinkertoy of metal that looked like gold filigree.
|
Two immediately come to mind:
1. The thrill of seeing the Grand Canal as you emerge from the train station in Venice.
2. The sight of The Pieta in St. Peter's. It literally brought tears to our eyes.
|
Good question!

1. The Rhine - a man I work with told me about his time in WWII right before I made my first trip, he was in the Battle of the Bulge. Seeing the Rhine and reflecting on everything he told me made it so real for me.
2. Neuschwanstein Castle from a road below the castle. We drove throughout Germany and found a flea market in
Schwanstein. As we were leaving we looked up and saw the castle amid a veil of mist ~ beautiful!
3. The green green country side of Germany ~ they should have their own color of green in the crayon box! (No, I haven't seen Ireland yet, that I know has to be another crayon color on its own!)
4. The glaciers of Greenland from the plane ~ so unexpected.
5. My husband & my 4 yr. old daughter picking me up from the airport after my solo trip to Europe.

What is a trip to Europe worth if it doesn't make you appreciate what you have at home!
|
1) Florence (pref. at night) from the Piazza Michelangelo. I never miss it when I go to Florence

2) San Gimigniano nestling in the hills from a little hotel nearby called Il Pescille

3) Crossing Waterloo Bridge (London) at night, with Parliament and the London Eye to my left and St Pauls to my right. When I was a child, my parents used to bring me to London for day trips and the sight of these places made me feel like I was on a film set. I still get that thrill even though I've lived here now for 5 years.

Hello ML, Montserrat, Spain! Incredible views and place! Judy :-)
|
Hello - Great Topic!!

While driving through the rolling hills of Normandy and suddenly seeing, in the distance, the hazy shadow Mount Saint Michel rising like a giant appatition from the ocean.

It has to be one of the wonders of the world. It never fell to the English during the 100 years war.

Ciao,

Randy Smith
|
The beautiful women.
|
The chimney pots of London from the top of a bus driving into the city from Heathrow on my first trip abroad. (Kind of made you want to jump up and sing chim chim charee.) Coming down out of the fog from Mt. Pilatus and seeing what appeared to be Heidi's grandfather's hut on the mountainside below. The mountains on the drive from Garmisch P. to Innsbruck. The Grand Place in Brussels. Sorrento; the view from Anacapri; Lake Lucerne--I've told you all before that I don't have any discrimination.
|
Another vote for the scene in front of the Venice train station.I felt like Dorothy walking out of her house into Oz.
|
Sam: Thank you soo much....

(PS: When I first travelled to the US, it was definitely the skyline of Manhattan from the plane, just breathtaking like the Swiss Alps!)
|
piazza s. marco, hands down.
|
I was actually flying to South Korea, but we flew over the Mackenzie Mountains in Alaska. Miles and miles of brown, snow-capped mountains and blue, blue skies. It was desolate but so beautiful. I think what made it so special was that everyone on the plane was asleep and I put a blanket over my head to peek out the inch of window I opened and I was the only one in the cabin that got to see the view at that point.

But I will let you know my most memorable view when I fly to Europe tomorrow afternoon, yippeee!
|
1. The Swiss Alps on my honeymoon, emerging from the train after traveling and the realization that not only am I married to this wonderful man, but I'm in Europe.
2. Notre Dame from the Air France bus - first time in Paris.
3. The Pieta - how could anyone have tried to ruin this masterpiece.
4. The David
|
Not exactly Europe, but the view of the old city of Jerusalem early in the morning from the Mount of Olives. The sunlight hitting the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount was something else!
|
Hi Ya

I think the most beautiful views are in Ireland. check out http://www.ireland.travel.ie for 360 degree views of spectacular scernery in Ireland.

Good luck:)
|
The American Cemetery at Omaha Beach. nothing else even ranks for me.
|
my most memorable veiw of europe was driving to paris from the ferry in caen with my lover.
there was the most incredible sunrise that morning,a dazzling gold in a bright blue sky. it was the beginning of a perfect trip.
i will treasure it in my mind forever.
|
Looking across Lake Lucerne in the autumn with the alps covered with the first winter's snow.
|
The Matterhorn and surrounding mountains from Gornergrat top my list (although every view in Switzerland is memorable).
|
1. The ring of Kerry: waking at dawn and, as the mist lifted over the next hour, seeing each mountain range appear gradually changing colour from grey to purple to green. Driving through the Ring on a sunny day, through the Gap seeing every shade of green imaginable and the shadows of the clouds racing across the valley.

2. First time back to Paris after several years. Standing on Pont des Arts

3. Prague: felt like I was transported back in time

4. Not Europe, but the MOST stunning was from the top of Moses mountain as the sun came up after a riotous camel ride and a gruelling hike.
|
The view out over the Vézère valley from my front door, especially in late spring when the fruit trees are all in bloom and there's a froth of pink and white mingling with the smoke from the farmers' chimneys, and the alluvial fields are brilliant green with freshly planted corn.
