What is one thing you don't regret doing while in Italy?
Good Morning,
I am going to be in Italy for a month this summer and I am looking for some great trip ideas while I am there. What was the best thing you did while in Italy?

Hi Kim,
While we visited many museums, churches, historical sites, etc.,the best times we spent in Italy were the times we just walked the little streets, sat and quietly enjoyed the local atmosphere, people watched, sat on park benches.....when we think back to our trips, our favorite memories are those where we "did" the least....

I'm with Ira...I don't regret eating absolutely everything that struck my fancy. That meant gelato at 10 a.m. some days, and an extra limoncello before bed on others...
Also, if I saw something shopping that I loved, I bought it without thinking twice. I've suffered buyer's regret more than once in my travels, but thankfully never in Italy!

I agree completely with Josser:
Spending two hours or more on a meal, outside if possible, is very civilized and extremely enjoyable.
This generally implies eating many courses, as Italians most often do if they are out for a leisurely evening. It is not something you will want to do if you prefer to have a single course.

Splurging on a centrally located hotel in Rome last time we were there. The first two times we stayed outside of the historic center, and our feet and legs ached from all walking. We decided to stay in the Piazza Navona area on our most recent trip, and it was wonderful! Granted we rented an apartment instead of a hotel room so it wasn't really splurging, but still worth it.
Otherwise, I agree with Sandi_travelnut. Just being able to go was incredible. I don't have any regrets.

Visiting the small, lovely museum in Montalcino. There was one person in the building when I got there and he left long before I did so I admired the art in absolute silence. Also bought a beautiful pair of museum reproduction silver earrings.
Then I went to Florence -- What a diffrence!

My most memorable experience in Italy was a leisurly meal at a small restaurant in Venice. As was the tiny restuarant's custom, my wife and I sat with four other people at a rectangular table. It was an enjoyable meal and the company most fun, especially a newlywed couple from Los Angeles. I've never seen the LA couple since but will always treasure our supper with them.

Taking some boat trips to see the lovely Italian coastal areas from the water. In Cinque Terre from the M town (sorry, can't spell it) back to Vernazza. And from Portofino up to a small monastery for a quick stop, then back down to Portofino and on to Santa Margherita.

Sorry, I can't regret anything about Italy at all...What's to regret except maybe more time there.
steviegene...I wish I had not been one of those daytrippers to Capri. Next time I'm staying on Capri. The only good thing about that was that we took a private boat to Capri from Positano and not the hydrofoil so we were given private boat tours around the island as well as along the mainland coast so that made it very special, a much longer day, but special nonetheless.

We enjoyed every minute of our 3 week trip last July, but the top things I would recommend are:
1) The view from and gardens inside Villa Cimbrone in Ravello (Amalfi Coast)
2)Chair lift to Mt. Solaro on Capri
3)Shopping at Piazza del Mercato - best prices on pashminas, jewelry, leather, etc. in Italy!
4)Reserved Uffizi in advance (phone number 011 39 055 294 883)
5)Napped before dinner most evenings!
