Yea, sure, m_kingdom. And that lady asking about the fish and chips was coming from the post about a traditional casual take-away fish and chips place where it comes wrapped in newspaper. She wanted one close to her Mayfair hotel, and you suggested J.Sheekey. So what part of that post was NOT intended to mislead. If you go to the back door of J.Sheekey's do you think they'd actually put some fish and chips in a newspaper and sell it to you? I shudder to think how a person wanting typical fish and chips would feel when arriving at J.Sheekey's and be faced with their menu.

Two more suggestions for the list:
- spend an afternoon wondering through the Victoria and Albert enjoying the wonderfully eclectic collections.
- take a river cruise on the Thames to Kew Gardens, and then enjoy tea at the Maids of Honour.

A few more:

Go and see "Jerry Springer The Opera", (unless you're easily offended).

Go to the English National Opera at the Colliseum for £10 (yes just £10).

This is a great thread. In addition to the pub walks already mentioned, I would add that any of Original London walks are a good deal. Also, they do Explorer Days which are great day trips out of London. The guides are very good. I love the stories I hear on these walks.

Visit the Dickens House on Doughty Street.

Visit the Sherlock Holmes Museum.

This thread has me wishing we were going for more than one day :-) We're taking the Eurostar to London from Paris, but I think we may be able to attend Evensong at St. Paul's Cathedral, as I checked their website, and it is at 5:00 PM.

Best,
Sandy

See the beautiful dining room at the V&A Museum that is decorated with panels by William Morris.

Look out for all the blue plaques near front entrances, indicating what famous persons lived at certain addresses.

Buy a hot-water bottle at Boots chemists, as the English do know how to make a good hot-water bottle.

More:

Visit the Royal School of Needlework located at the east front of Hampton Court Palace.

Shop for woolens and cashmeres at good prices at the Westaway & Westaway across the street from the British Museum.

Buy an umbrella from James Smith (picture here):

Also: Buy cigars and cigarettes from Dunhills,

m_kingdom Mar 18th, 2004 07:39 AM

Do tell us all what exactly "Dunhills" is.

Alfred Dunhill is a luxury accessory and clothing brand based in Jermyn St.

Dunhill Tobacco Company manufactures cigarettes/cigars - relatively good quality, but by no means anywhere near the best. They own a 19% share in Alfred Dunhill, but are NOT stocked in Dunhill stores, so are, as such a completely separate brand.

James Smith is also an excellent choice for buying canes. My wife's most recent came from them and they fitted it to her on the spot.

Also a great place for a shooting stick.

RAF museum in Hendon.

Imperial War Museum - incredible displays for a minimal entrance (donation)fee.

Ronnie Scott's (Jazz Club)

I'm still curious where one may purchase "dunhills".

david_west Mar 19th, 2004 07:44 AM

I know where I mean, and obviously have the name wrong - it's in mayfair. Lovely old tobacconist, mixes his own stuff, plus millions of fags etc I haven't seen elsewhere. Smells fantastic (and I am a non-smoker hence upbuggering the name)

It has a big "Dunhills" sign on it.

I have avoided the obvious fag and shag references here. Apart from just then, obviously.

Have you considered anger management courses me old china? Maybe you should get a couple of Brittneys down you. You're very uptight.

helenhopehana Mar 19th, 2004 07:48 AM

Tea at Browns, tour of the war rooms, train trip to winsor, night of theatre, drinking and eating at a corner pub or even a pub crawl.walk in many of the great parks, side trip to cotswolds I could go on and on.

The whole point of a travel forum is to advise other travellers where and what to see.

What do you achieve by posting something that only you know where it is?

Katiebug Mar 20th, 2004 08:26 PM

m_kingdom: You may not find any pleasure or value in David West's posting, however some of us did. The posting was "100 Great things to do in London," not "100 great exact locations of where you can do things in London." Of course, it's grand to know where (exactly) some people find pleasurable experiences, but it's also fun to just hear about the experience itself.

You might try giving up your negitivity & anger. Pleasure & relaxation is much more enjoyable. After all, isn't that what travel is all about?

Now, let's move on!
