visiting the wine shops in La Rioja
Hello - hoping to pull in some regulars who might know how we should structure our one day in Haro in late April of this year.
2 couples, diverting from Bilbao for one night before heading to San Sebastian, for the person in our group who's the biggest wine fan. I've read that Haro is a good base, but that to tour the bodegas, we should reserve several in advance. We're interested in choices inside the town, I think, although we do have one husband who shuns wine so he's our built-in designated driver! Any help or experience to offer? If we need to book thru a local source, I'd love to know that. And I've already set up my trip report format - not that I'm toooo excited about 3 1/2 weeks in Spain! (we leave April 9th!) So I will definitely report back on our adventure!
Thanks for any help!

I´m not sure about what you´re asking...there´s the Barrio de la Estación in Haro where the most famous bodegas are located (Muga, Viña Tondonia,...), and you can book thru their web page. You can easily walk from town to these bodegas. They offer a visit and a wine tasting, for about ten euros. And then you have bars in town, as in all of Spain, where you can enjoy a glass of wine. In any case, Laguardia is also an excellent option, if I had to choose. btw, I´m a local.

Mikelg -I was hoping to hear from you! I love the blog and have copied good info from you!
From some sourcebook, I had the impression that the various vineyards had shops in Haro that wine mercants and tourists like us could sample wines, rather than driving to the vineyards. The friend with us is especially interested in sampling a good variety (more than we "should" get from just a tapas wandering!)
I'm going to check out the web page you mention right now. And thank you for your postings over the past year as I've planned - you are a major reason we're spending 8 days in the north of Spain!
Thanks!

Thank you, I´m overwhelmed...and proud at the same time that you´re coming to this small land of ours, so pretty and unique!!
My suggestion: visit Haro, visit Laguardia and their wineries...any will do...but if you want to taste different wines, just enter ANY bar and order a glass of crianza, in another one another different brand, or a cosechero (year wine), or a reserva...but change brands. For 1,60EUR a glass, plus a pintxo for around 1 euro or 1,5 euros, you´ll enjoy real life in northern Spain in the company of locals!!
