Vegetarians in London

My family (two adults two children 12 and 13) will be traveling to London this summer however we are concerned about what we will be able to eat since we are vegetarians and don't eat fried food either. We have heard that breakfasts are of meat and cheese and there isn't very much fruit. If anyone knows of any retaurants that could fit our needs of a healthy vegetarian diet or anything else about what it eaten in London please reply. Thanks.

Breakfasts of meat and cheese are more likely to be found elsewhere in Europe, although what you might be thinking of is the infamous English Breakfast with its fried bread, bacon, etc. It's very easy to avoid - there's always a "Continental Breakfast" option (muesli, fruit, rolls, etc). I'm a vegetarian and I've never had any problems eating in London - there are restaurants that specifically cater for vegetarians (eg Cranks - has various branches) but almost all other restaurants will have several vegetarian options

Hi Jen:

Try Sandra Gustafson's series of books, "Cheap Eats." Not only does she list affordable vegetarian places in many cities, she lists nonsmoking places too, which will be a relief to you after you've breathed all that second hand smoke for a while.

Try the Movenpick chain of restaurants for things like fruit smoothies and salads. There's also a chain of Italian restaurants (the name escapes me, begins with a "B") where you can get a good cheese pizza.

Most hotel rooms in London seem to have hot water kettles and tea and coffee, so you can always purchase some scones and jam at the local market if you want a quick breakfast some morning.

Have a good time in London.

Jen,
You might consider renting an apartment because having a kitchen makes eating very easy!! We're not vegetarians (altho I lean a bit that way in my eating habits) and we've found that having an apartment enables us to fix our own breakfasts and eat what we like (avoiding fatty goods and cigerette smoke which is pretty prevalent in many places). We also enjoy trips to the grocery store and Harrod's Food Court, Marks & Spencer, etc. to stock up on goodies! You can buy fruit in any of the grocery stores and corner neighborhood markets as well, we always keep some on hand in the apt. we rent.

As for other meals, we've never found it a real problem, most menus have some vegetarian items, etc. There are plenty of pasta places, salad bars, etc.

You might like to try South Indian vegetarian food while you're here. Try Rasa W1 on Dering St, just off Oxford St, or Diwana and its neighbours on Drummond St near Euston Station. Delicious!
