Two side trips...
We'll be taking two side trips on our upcoming London/Paris trip. We'll be heading to Windsor from London and Reims from Paris. I was planning on purchasing the train tickets while there. Good plan or should I purchase them before we go?

Perfectly fine plan. You'll save money, and be able to adjust your plans, based on mood and weather.

Best wishes,

Rex
[email protected]
Ask for the "All in one ticket to Windsor" You must buy it on the day you travel. Leaves from Waterloo station. Just go to the ticket booth and ask for the all in one for Windsor Castle. If the Royals are not there they will sell you the ticket.

Hi,

Went to Reims from Paris about a month ago, during the week. Bought tickets that day, 20E. Train was half full. C0uple of stops before Reims. Train from Gare de Est clean, efficient and on time. Took about 2 hrs. Web page is www.sncf.fr Also, there is a machine to validate the ticket on the Gate platform. Have to do that before getting on train.

You can walk from the train station to the cathedral, about 10-15 mins. You will pass remains of old roman walls. Tourist Office is beside cathedral. Look for smiling angel statues on outside.

My notes are at home so I will consult them..I know there is a pedestrian area not too far from the Cathedral with many restaurants. Also, there is a Champagne shop across from cathedral that has decent selection and pricing. Visited Taitinger cellar. Build under ruins of old church and Roman "chalk mine". Neat visit, with a glass of their best afterwards. 3 millons bottles in the caves!

Hope this helps
Mike

I'm not sure exactly what Rex means when he says you'll save money by buying the tickets in Paris. You'd definitely save money over purchasing them from RailEurope, but you can often go to the www.sncf.com site and purchase J8 and J30 tickets that will save you from 25% and up for advance purchase (the former for 8 or more days in advance, the latter for 30 or more days in advance)over what you'd pay just walking into the station when you get to Paris. You pay by credit card, print out the confirmation information, and pick up the tickets at the station when you arrive.
