Two pousadas -- any recommendations?
If anyone has stayed in either the pousada in Vila Nova de Cerveira (on the Minho River) or in Amares (near Braga), I'd appreciate learning what you thought about them and how they compare. Many thanks, LR

I have not at those 2 but fell in love with the one at Viano do Castello not far from there--and the town. We used it as our base to explore the Minho area. But, we also stayed later at a manor house named Paco de Calheiros outside of Ponte di Lima---very nice.

The only bad thing about this article is that it's going to increase the pousada traffic so much! Some of those out of the way places are just beautiful. I heartily concur with the opinions about Mesao Frio, it was absolutely georgeous. One recommendation for anyone staying there, though -- request a room on the first floor (first floor up from the ground floor that is) and not the second. We spent out first night up on the top floor in a very small room, which was fine but it was terribly windy and something was banging outside all night. So the next day we asked to be moved and were surprised and how much nicer the rooms on the first floor were, with higher ceilings, bigger windows, much more space.
We never did get to Amares, but that's now on the top of my list.
The article mentions Guimaraes' two pousadas, and we've stayed in both, but for my money the out of town convent wins hands down. The in-town place is rustic and comfortable, but the commons areas are small and nothing special. The convent (about 5 km outside of town, if memory serves me well) has beautiful grounds, beautiful commons rooms, and lovely views.
The article doesn't mention the pousada in Vila Nova de Cerveira, but it was a great find as well. Really nice little river town, a nice old center and lots of cafes in the square. And the pousada is inside the walls of the castle. Very very nice.
Oh, to be in Portugal.....
