Travelling between Greece and Croatia

I was looking for a local travel agent until I came across this site. I've been doing a bunch of research and now need help tighing it together. I live in LA and need to fly to New York August 22nd -August 25th 2013 (no flexibility with dates). Early on August 25th I want to travel to one of the Greek Islands for a romantic relaxing honeymoon with clear blue water (maybe Mykonis) for 5 days and then I have to be in Spilt, Croatia for Saturday, August 31st by noon. I'll then head back to LA Sunday, September 1st. We will be two travelling and are trying to find out the best way to plan for our 5 day honeymoon. Clearly having to be in NY on one Sat and Croatia the following Sat is not the best logistically, but that's what we have to work with. Any thoughts or suggestions on how we can best get from Greece to Spilt, Croatia. I see no direct flights and connecting flights are expensive and waste half a day, at the minimum. I am also open to other suggestions other than the greek islands, but I really want clear warm water to awe us! Goals: maximize honeymoon time and affordability.

Is there some reason you are excluding Croatia's clear warm waters?

I have tried for several years in a row to find decent connections between Greece and Croatia. As far as I know, there are none. You need to connect in and out of London, Rome or Venice, which is the main reason we've never combined the two. If you find anything different, let me know!

My best advice would be to spend the entire week in Croatia, then fly back to LA from there. Good luck!

hmmmm I visited Spilt once before and don't remember clear waters. Perhaps I missed something. The pics from the greek islands look stunning. Is Croatia comparable? Any suggestions?

Split is a port city, but Croatia has over 1000 islands along its coast--surely one of them will do. Try some internet searches.
http://www.croatia-beaches.com/ is a good resource
August will be crowded, but it can't be more crowded than Mykonos.

The Cyclades are totally different from the croatian island, which look more like the Ionian islands....

Croatia has also mostly pebble and rocky beaches, nothing can beat the great sandy beaches of the Aegean Sea

Croatia Airlines used to connect Athens with Dubrovnik and Zaqgreb... but it seems that they are not flying anymore to Greece.

If you want to spend your 5-6 days on a Greek island, looks like you will have to take a quite expensive flight on your way back to Split. ( via some other city)

Staying in Croatia could be a great alternative , as others suggested.

I can't seem to find a luxury hotel on a sandy beach with clear blue/green water in Croatia. Any suggestions?

I don't think that Croatia has many sandy beaches....
I think it has mostly pebbly-rocky beaches... but after a small research i found :

http://www.croatia-beaches.com/sandy...ch_croatia.htm

That might help you a bit

Granted I have not been to Santorini, but I am not seeing any difference in the water color between Greece and Croatia. Now of course most Croatian beaches are rocky--that is why the water is so clear. I'm afraid it sounds like you want Greece or the Caribbean or Asia, but you only have 5 days. Can you do the honeymoon a different time?
Most people stay in private apartments in Croatia, but there are some luxury hotels in Split.
I would choose Palmizana: http://www.palmizana.hr
You alternative is to find a place you can fly to direct from NY and then to Split--nothing will find that but a long time with a flight search engine. And you are again left with transfers. Try skyscanner.

I realize that.
Why not, people do not have to do a honeymoon immediately after a wedding, especially if it compromises what they want to do for the honeymoon.

Thanks, I'll check out Palmizana. I guess we can try to sacrifice the sandy beach as long as the hotel is luxurious right on a clear blue water front. I've heard Hvar may be my best bet, but haven't been super impressed with the hotel pics. I also looked at coastal cities in the Mediterranean which had direct flights to Split and my best option is Rome. Now can I find a beach, sandy blue water hotel near Rome?

You might want to start a new thread so the Italian experts will see that last question--good luck!

afrikat - Did you ever figure this out? My husband and I are trying to do the same Croatia / Greek island combo, but I'm having difficulty figuring out how to do it. Would love to hear what you ended up doing!

SaraFay, the OP hasn't been back on Fodor's for over a year, so I doubt (s)he is still checking the forum. Given the difficulty of combining Croatia and Greece in one holiday, suggest you pick one of the two.

There are flights with Croatia Airlines from Zagreb and Dubrovnik to Athens, at extremely high prices...
( i checked random dates in July and August and a one way ticket was around 360 Euro).

This is the only way to get to Greece from Croatia.

There is a strong demand for Croatia - Greece combined travels lately which motivated the two countries to work on ways to connect the 2 countries efficiently, but this will take one year for sure.

Heimdall and clausar, thank you for the responses. Do you have any experience with either country? I was set on Croatia and we would go to Split, Dubrovnik, Plitvice, and possibly Budapest on our way home..... But I have been looking at the Greek Islands and they look amazing. I am a huge fan of beaches, and I've read that the Croatian beaches are gorgeous but rocky. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Clausar is Greek, and I have been to Greece many times, mainly to the islands. I have been interested in visiting Croatia, but so far have never been. My daughter combined both countries in one trip, but that was part of a year-long overland journey in a Land Rover from London to Cape Town.

I have only been to Zagreb ( about 15 times...) but never to the Croatian Coast....
From what i have heard most beaches are rocky/pebbly.
Why don't you start a thread about Croatia?
