I wouldnt waste my time with travelers checks. Use the ATM. They are everyplace. We are so far behind in the states. We have to go to a Bank to use them. Just be sure your ATM password is 4 digits not 6. You can look on the internet to find the location. Just go to www.dogpile and type ATM location. Choose your location, Ireland. Wala. Happy traveling.

I would forget travelers checks when traveling to Europe. 20 years ago, maybe yes.

You might want to take some just for cases of emergency then cash them in when you return to the U.S.

ATM's are just about everywhere. If you can't find one, go into any hotel and ask where the nearest one is located.

Agreed. I have taken travelers checks and never used them. ATMs are easy to find. A word of warning, if you leave the airport and are on the M50, you must have Euros with you. After the first couple of exits you come to the only toll booth in Ireland. It's about E1.30 now.

Bill

A clarification: ATMs are esy to find in the BIGGER cities, but NOT in the smaller villages or countryside! I did a week-long trek in Ireland, and ONLY ONE town that we passed through had an ATM! Yes, if you're in Dublin, ATMs are everywhere, but NOT in the countryside, so keep at least a few days' cash on hand!

I apologize, Christie is right. They are hard to find in small villages. But towns the size of Dingle, Kenmare, Westport and the like have plenty of ATMs. I also think I heard somewhere that there is a move to put ATMs in the post offices there. Was I crazy or dreaming? Not sure. That one will take some advice from a local.

Bill

There's no pattern to ATMs in Ireland. I've found one in the tiniest of villages (only one pub), but then couldn't find any in a decent-sized town like Manorhamilton (not exactly a tourist destination!).

My bane was Lisdoonvarna, which IS a tourist destination close to the Cliffs. I stayed there for the last 2 nights on our trek, and no ATM to be found. There was also not one in Corofin, which is the location of the Clare Heritage Centre museum. That would be GREAT if ATMs were installed in the Post offices!
