Travel Insurance

I am travelling to Italy in the fall and would like to purchase travel insurance. I have already paid for the culinary tour I will be taking, as well as for my airline tickets (or at least the fee for using airline miles).

Can anyone recomend where I should purchase travel insurance and what level of coverage I need? I will be renting a car for 3 days so maybe I should think about collision insurance? I also want to make sure a new airline ticket will be covered if something impedes my trip, but I am not sure how to calulate that cost.

Thanks in advance.

I would recommend TravelEx; children traveling with you are covered for free. They will cover existing conditions if your purchase within 21 days of buying your tour.

Bear in mind that the premium goes in $1,000 dollar increments, so only cover the fee for using miles if it doesn't put you into the next level.

TravelEx Lite includes Trip Cancellation, Delay, and Interruption insurance, so that ought to take care of your needs... also medical emergencies while you are abroad.

I think that anytime you rent a car in Italy, insurance is compulsory and covered in the cost of the rental.

Enjoy the culinary tour! What did you book?

I think the OP needs to know what they need covering before they can choose a policy

1) Medical fees - it's unlikely that your existing plan will cover you outside the US
2) Medical repatriation - in case they have to hire a plane to get you home
3) Death cover - yup it happens, do you want the body sent home or will you settle for a part of Italy that's forever American
4) Cover for other members of the family in any of the above - hotel bills, travel costs, new airline tickets
5) trip cancellation / missed flights / delayed flights / lost luggage
6) theft - will you have any expensive items

You also need to knwo if you already have some cover form another source - eg credit cards

I also recommend Travelex

https://www.travelex.com/

They provide an instant quote, based on the price of your trip, length of stay and ages of insured. Easy to use website and they offer an option to purchase additional car insurance, if you want extra coverage.

Forget the last link, use this link: https://www.travelex-insurance.com/C...r/Welcome.aspx

It will take you right to the location in the site rather than having to sift your way through their financial services site to get to travel insurance.

Just a quick note for Canadian residents. I checked with insuremytrip.ca and called them as well but was told that trip cancellation insurance needs to be purchased withinn 48/72 hours of the first trip payment.
