travel insurance
We have friends who are traveling with us to France for 3 weeks in June. Their mother is very ill and they want to get travel insurance for worst case scenario. Does anyone have a company they would recommend?

Agree insuremytrip.com is best place to look. you can filter using different things that are important (cancel for any reason, cancel for work, etc.) and a list of policies come up and you can compare them side by side. I always go there and buy from there, actually just purchased one yesterday for our trip later this year. All the major companies that offer trip insurance will appear on their site.

Your friends might want to look for "cancel for any reason" policies, and if so, they should pay attention to the percentage they will have to pay if they cancel. Note that many such policies must be purchased shortly after booking, so encourage them to act quickly!

They need to compare the price of "cancel for any reason" being sure to take note of pre-existing conditions and exclusions) of the policy with the <b>amount of money they will "really" lose </b>if they can't go.
Sometimes hotels that are prepaid will allow you to use funds at a later date; airlines may do the same, usually with a year of original booking date and usually with a fee (but still may be better than losing total paid) and there may be similar reusable portions of what they've already paid.
And what would you do, willowjane? Would you still go? How will that impact you're costs -- were there shared costs that now you'll now have to shoulder alone? IF you cancels too, how does that impact you?

Allianz coverd trip interruption when my Mom died and I had to purchase a ticket to come home. I was refunded the change fee and the money the airline charged me extra for day of travel price. I had purchased ticket for around 1100 so 550 plus another 1000 for day of. YES, Airlines can do that.I now book directly with them and no longer buy with ticket for more coverage. This trip I even got insurance to cover apartment rental.
