Travel Ideas for traveling by campervan rome tuscany

WE NEED HELP........
My mum and i have booked a campervan, pck up and drop off from Rome (FCO) and drive up through Tuscany in Mid June for 11 days.
Not sure how long to stay on the A1 without missing some gorgeous small towns? though not wanting to lose too much time either.
We want to see Pisa (tower), Lucca (bike the wall), Florence, San G, Cinque Terre (hike), Arezzo (There are a couple of festials/horse race on in the area 18&19th June)
What other places can we include?

We are having trouble choosing which way to go and the best places to camp over night. We will then train to Venice for a few days before leaving for France.
Horse and bike riding are interests as well as historic sites, general sight seeing and yummy food and wine.
We want to feel the real Tuscany not just the tourist spots.

We only have 6 weeks before we go!!!!.

This campground is outside of Florence. I haven't stayed there, but if you search the web for soultravelers3 blog, they have a report of staying there.

Other campgrounds are also listed.

Are you dropping off the camper van in Rome?

At one point in the 11 days do you want to be in Arezzo?

Thanks for the campground info kybourbon.
Yes we are taking the campervan back to Rome.
Yes. There is a medieval fest on the 18th in San G. and an evening fest that night in Arezzo. The following day there is a roman horse race in Castiglion Fiorentino on the 19th.
Van back to Rome the morning of the 21st.

......????

Looks like you want to put San Gimignano, Arezzo and Castiglion Fiorentino at the very end of your 11-day Tuscan tour, and that makes things a bit harder.

You may find it very difficult to attend all three festivals with your campervan. Many festivals attract lots of traffic, and parking lots fill up quickly. If you are planning on spending the night in a campground near Arezzo, you need to figure out how to get to and from your camp ground to wherever the festival is being held in Arezzo. It is highly unlikely that you will be able to park you camper near the festival, and public transportation often doesn't run late at night.

Le Cinque Terre is someplace where it is very difficult to manuever a camper van to parking lots. You might do much better to find a campground with convenient train access to le Cinque Terre. One thing you might consider is finding a campground in the marina of Carrara, or around Versilia, where you could take a train not only to le Cinque Terre, but to Lucca and Pisa as well.

I have no personal experience with a campervan itinerary through Tuscany, so I don't know where campgrounds are. If you would like a feeling for the real Tuscany, consider driving a loop that starts by driving north through Western Tuscany, targeting such towns as Saturnia, Magliano in Toscana, perhaps the Abbey of San Galgano (near Chiusdino) and Massa Marritima, and then onto le Cinque Terre/Lucca/Pisa. Then Flornence, then San Gimignano, Arezzo, Castiglion Fiornetino, then take a scenic route south via Sinalunga/Montalcino/Montepulciano.

If you can somehow part with the idea of the festivals in Arezzo and Castiglion Fiorentino, you could head south from San Gimignano toward Montalcino/Montepulciano and spend more time there. While it is heavily touristed, it is the part of Tuscany most famous for scenic driving.

Another way to get off the beaten track in Tuscany and still have fascinating and beautiful surroundings is to spend time in the hills and towns just north and east of Lucca, and also the areas surrounding Arezzo, including the nearly-untouristed towns of Lucignano or Loro Ciuffena, or Anghiari.

However, do realize that if having a campervan means parking at a campground well outside towns, you will either need to eat your meals in the camper or track down some countryside restaurants with parking lots big enough to accommodate you. It may be that you contact with native Tuscans is limited by being based in campgrounds.

Have a look at the foll0wing websites which have reviews of campsites in europe including many in italy:
http://www.campingcard.co.uk/gb/en/home/uc33-l2-n641/
This website also provides information on how if you join ( 11 euros) you can save on campsite fees as you can stay for 15 euros a night instead of, for example, 40 euros which is a significant saving.
http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/
This is a UK based site with reviews of campsites in italy amongst others.
YOu will find campsites in the towns e.g in pisa there is one 800 metres for the Tower http://www.campingtorrependente.it/

Enjoy
