Travel groups

Does anyone know a reliable and safe facebook/twitter or anykind of forum group where ppl gather/plan to go traveling so they have more fun than going alone? When i was young i had this pen friend program and it was really awesome, i got to go visit the country in the end and live at their place for the time being. Are there any? Not necesarily to live at their place, but at least a forum where someone initiates a trip and ppl say yey or nay.

Hi alina_dumitriu,

People say yea or nay to what?

If you''d like information and tips for your travel plans, this forum is a great place to start. You start by doing a search for the town/country you're visiting and seeing what others have asked; you can also look for trip reports to see what people have done.

Have fun as you plan!

After you've looked at what's been said about your destination, you can ask your own questions and get your own itinerary tweaked and perfected.

Hei, well, my Q. wasn't about how to use this site. I am interested in taking a year of to travel, europe and asia. But I don't like traveling alone. So i was wondering if there are forums with travelers all around the word whom i can hook up for the next destination so I don't go alone.
For egz: destination,Cambodia, i see the announce and say join, you join, x from sua join etc. understand?

Ah, ok. I really didn't know what you wanted people to say "yea or nay" to.

If you stay in hostels (Europe) and guesthouses (Asia) you will naturally meet other travelers. That way you can actually see the people you are thinking of spending time with instead of relying on the internet.

Another idea is to join SERVAS a friendship organization that -- once you are approved by their group -- gives you the names of people who live in the countries to which you are traveling. Some of the people will host you in their homes, while others will just meet you for coffee.

@ellenem - you can do the same thing with the couchsurfing site, which has the benefit of being free. But the OP was looking for fellow travelers, not locals.

Thursdaysd, Based on the OP's description of the pen friend and his/her joy of visiting a "local", it seemed to me that they were looking for someone to talk to and spend time with upon reaching the destination as well as a possible companion for the trip. It seems to me the OP is looking for options to not be alone. To some the membership cost of SERVAS would be a benefit, since the members are screened—a bit more secure than a blind meetup.

Are you a member of any group (church, synagogue, school, book club, etc) that has people who might be interested in travel? You could create an itinerary, estimate costs, etc. and perhaps post it on the group's website or simply make a nice one page flier with info and pass them to friends.

If you do not mind a tour, you could even work with some of the group tour companies, book yourself as a group leader and book a few friends to go with you. This isn't very freewheeling, it takes work, and you will have to take on some responsibility, but it can be fun. If that appeals to you at all, just be careful about the tour you book (not one that spends most of the time on a bus with no free time) and research the company well.

There are also volunteer situations in nearly every country where you could do something interesting and meet people.

You might need a visa to stay for that length of time (depends on your actual itinerary and country you are from).
