Denmark and Sweden - Credit Card Acceptance in Supermarkets and Metros?
Hello.
I'll be visiting Demark and Sweden for the first time next month and would like to know if credit cards are accepted in supermarkets and the metro systems. I'm a very experienced traveller, especially in Europe. I know in most European countries one can do so, but know that Germany in particular that's not the case.
Thanks in advance.

For Denmark, it depends... Most supermarkets theoretically accept credit cards, but there is no guarantee that the staff will know how to process a card without a Chip, so if you are planning on swiping, you might have a bit of trouble, particularly at a smaller store.
As to the metro, I am about 80% certain that the machines accept foreign cards, even without chips, but it has been a while since I have used one.

We were in Copenhagen last week and were not able to get our US credit cards to work in the metro ticket machines. It required a PIN. Technically, we have a PIN for one of our cards but never use it at home, and I couldn't recall the PIN at the time. I don't know if that would have made a difference. Further, the machines we used (airport and Norreport) only took coins, not bills.

Same experience as ms_go regarding US credit card usage in the Copenhagen metro....did not work using the machine nor using the ticket counter. They asked for a PIN number. We ended up going to an ATM machine and getting cash to pay for our 10-tix klippenkort.
As for the supermarket, our hotel was next to one, it did take our credit card without any trouble.

So how do you use credit cards in machines?
You either sign (most stores) or no signature or other authorization is required (many gas stations). Some gas stations will have you input your billing zip code as authorization.
The PINs that people have for their US credit cards are good only for getting cash from an ATM, they are not used at point-of-sale terminals.
