Transportation in Naples

Am arriving in Naples via cruise ship and am taking the express train from Naples to Sorrento for a partial day. Wondering what the distance is from pier to train station. Is it too far to walk or what would be the best mode of transport? Also, can train tickets be purchased at the train station? If not, then where?

I don't know the distances, but was on cruise that stopped in Naples a couple years ago, and there were lots of warnings about pickpockets (which are going to be in any country in areas where there are lots of tourists). There was a site (I don't know it off hand) but if you put in Italian Train Schedules in your search engine, you might find it, or someone will know it. That might help a lot. It was a site operated just for Italian train system. Or it might be under a "tourist info for Naples." Good luck.

Hi, i'm alex, i live in naples and i'm here to help you.

To go to sorrento you'll bring a "Circumvesuviana Train".
The journey until sorrento has a duration of 1 hours and 8 minutes, there are trains wich leaving every 30 minutes from naples station. The Circumvesuviana station nearest the port is the "Napoli Porta nolana" station, situated in Garibaldi road.

To go from the port to the station is easy, you'll need to take a tram, number 1, right in front of the exit of port; Put yourself with your backs to the sea, and please be careful to take the tram that goes to your right! see the map link below for the distance:

You can buy a ticket from one of bar which are situated in the port.
You can buy ONE DAILY TICKET TO USE ALL PUBLIC TRANSPORT (bus, train, tram in naples as in sorrento). Ticket are called "UNICOCAMPANIA FASCIA 5" (fascia=level). Be careful to buy a DAILY ticket, at price of 6 euro, an use it allday for all your movements. Same ticket is avaible also in the station.

Finally, I'm happy that you're coming to naples in this so difficult moment. I am sure that you'll still amazed by the beauty of our places and you'll check that many things that someone said you are terribly false. I did not give warnings to you, you must use common sense, remember that you're in a big city like newyork, so not run showing expensive watches or cameras. This is the only warning, which applies to everyone in all cities, even for me.
Have a nice journey, and if you or someone else need other info about naples, you can find me on my blog:

ciao ciao

You can also go from Napoli to Sorrento by boat, though they are less frequent and less reliable than the trains.

Travelling one way by boat and the other way by train would be more interesting. The trains are not express trains, but commuter trains similar to a metro or subway, with sliding doors and hard plastic seats. "Aleonline" offers very good advice on the transport arrangements.

Hi CM,

>..am taking the express train from Naples to Sorrento.

I fear the you have been misinformed.

The only train is the Circumvesuviana commuter train.

www.viamichelin says that it is 2.5 km on foot. (mostly uphill).
