One way train ticket is nearly the same price for the return, so you wouldn't get any discount (don't expect half price). why don't you fly? going to KLMuk site or EasyJet, you might get some deals.
GreatNorthEasternRail offer london to glasgow service, you can expect about 5 hours to be there, without discounts it can cost you 60GBP, book early you will get cheaper price, please look for british rail service website and buy early if you intend to do so.
Good luck.

You could fly, but remember that you then have to get from the airport to the city centre, and that will cost time and money, especially given that some of the airlines that offer cheap seats go to airports further away than Gatwick or Heathrow. Even going to those two airports, it will take at least one hour from touching down to getting to the city centre.

So, try www.thetrainline.com and see if you can't get a cheap ticket. Virgin Trains go from Glasgow via the west coast, G N E R via the east coast. G N E R goes to London Kings Cross and Virgin to London Euston, both of which are central. Travelling on a Friday will cost you more, as will travelling on a public holiday.
B T W, sometimes, believe it or not, ultra cheap deals are returns only, not singles, so try punching in a return date a few days later to see if you can get the cheapest deal.

Michelle:

I had the same question a few weeks ago and found a good solution.

I suggest you check out the Virgin trains Web site at http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/index.htm.

I managed to get a total fare of 20 pounds for both myself and my friend. A great bargain and they assured me over the phone it is not sitting in a cattle car. I just happened to snag a good deal.

You do have to be sure and purchase your ticket 14 days in advance at least. Try to do it as soon as you can because the good morning times tend to go quickly.

Virgin trains have a kiosk in Glasgow's Central Station, I'm told.

Good luck!

T.

Just be aware that Virgin Trains has a truly terrible reputation for unreliability and lateness. Strange that Branson allows this public relations disaster to continue when other products/services in his empire enjoy a much more positive image.

I'd fly any day given the choice - no contest.

Michelle,
I just returned form UK and while there we took a train from York to Edinburgh. We went on a GNER train. I liked the train up the east coast, saw great scenery. We were in a standard class car (2nd class) and were quite comfortable.Train has restaurant or buffet car. I checked the trainline.com site first but hard to understand. BritRail site is useless. Finally called GNER in London and they were very nice and very helpful. I think you can only purchase 90 days in advance, but definitely do it. You could call anytime for questions. They offer many advance purchase fares (limited amounts) like Super savers, savers, apex, etc. we also purchased a family rail card and saved another 30% off the super saver fare I already had. Be aware, there are many fares (and one-ways are usually not much less than return) so shop around.
Good luck.
