to do with kids 2 1/2 days with a layover in frankfurt

We have a layover in Frankfurt for 2 1/2 days (arriving in the morning of july 2 and flying out late evening on july 4) on the way to an African safari. Trying to decide the best place to travel with my husband and 9 and 12 year old daughters. We are active and adventurous. My oldest is also a foodie. We have thought about taking a train to Grindelwald and staying there for 2 days to enjoy the swiss alps and culture. But that is a 6 hour train ride each way. We have also thought about going to Munich and then checking out the Bavarian Alps near Garmisch. Less travel time but still 4 hours and then some. Any suggestions on pros and cons of each area? Or is there something else exciting near Frankfurt that I am missing?
