Here in Galicia, in the city of A Coruña there is a movement to stop the bull fighting.
https://www.facebook.com/galiciamell...uradas?fref=nf
Yes it is a FB page as they have yet to get a website working.

pariswat Jul 13th, 2015 12:05 AM

We should boycott Sevilla then.

And watch fights with chickens or dogs. Seems it is cultural in some countries.

alvamo Jul 13th, 2015 04:54 AM

I´m andalusian and for me is a shame all the corridas and the ferias, now in august we have 2 weeks of bullfighting in a row, 6 bulls are killed everyday in La Malagueta.

IMDonehere Jul 13th, 2015 05:17 AM

To be fair, Ribe, bullfighting was never popular in Galicia to begin with.

Bedar Jul 13th, 2015 05:34 AM

And, there's an independece movement in Galicia, too.

ribeirasacra Jul 13th, 2015 08:20 AM

It must have been quite popular for there to be several arenas in Galicia.
Independence has nothing to do with this action. Your comment is as if all of the Spaniards have no compassion for animals.

Going back to the events in Pamplona.
Not only is this event unsafe for bulls it is unsafe for women too.

Sexist - too and Spain - a pseudo modern country - remains a backwater of sexism and sanctioned animal torture. Yet folks continue to hype this macho sadistic event where women are bullied to remain out of the action. Bravo Espagne!

Exceptionalism at its worse!

I'm just wondering how it works to participate in the bull run: Do you have to sign up previously? Where can you do that and is it necessary to do it in advance? Are there any requirements - except being drunk of course?

I'm just curious ...

<I'm just wondering how it works to participate in the bull run>

No signing up, just be within the enclosed route some half an hour before the run starts. My best memory from running is the tense "convivencia" spirit in the bars along the route in the minutes leading up to the run - when everybody drinks chocolate and feed eachother with churros or whatever - and then go out in the street with their rolled newspapers to sing the blessing "A San Fermin pedimos..." shortly before the bulls are launched just down the road.

Only idiots are drunk at this hour, and those who obviously pose a danger to others (the biggest problem when it comes to injuries is people stumbling on top of eachother, and then it can get nasty if a bull is right behind) will not be allowed into the route or shown away by the police: http://runningofthebulls.travel/la-p...-the-festival/

_________

If you are going to insult a country, at least do it in their language. It is not Spanish. Not Catalan. Not Euskadi. Not Galego. That's right French.

As far as being backward and sexist
Decriminalized prostitution in 1995
Legalized gay marriage in 2005
The Mayors of Madrid and Barcelona are leftist women

And considering that Franco has been dead only for 40 years, I would say that Spain has made much progress than many nations.

Facts and logic the enemies of prejudice.

PalenQ Jul 14th, 2015 11:15 AM

IMD - you have shown me the light - yes my initial reaction was a hyperbole not proven out in facts - The Running of the Bulls remains sexist and endorses animal torture but not all of Spain which with your facts come to light sounds like Spain is as progressive in those realms as any European country.

Bravo!

PS - I were not writing in Spanish nor French - Bravo being also an Anglicism like used in our rodeos.

IMDonehere Jul 14th, 2015 11:21 AM

No you just ignoring all the other progressive accomplishments in Spain because it does not fit your prejudice and narrative. No matter what language you think you are using.

BTW, the etymology of bravo is Italian meaning bold.

pariswat Jul 14th, 2015 11:31 AM

Bravo Espagne is not French.

Thanks PQ for your clarification (and I mean it).

Generalities are always wrong of course.
Except when about Belgians : we're all beautiful, smart, well behaving, and ... so humble.

PalenQ Jul 14th, 2015 11:41 AM

Bravo Espagne is not French.>

I was subconciously using French for Spain in stead of Espagna - put an e instead of an a.

Bull-fighting like our rodeos and bull-riding is a macho sport appealing mainly to men I think - bullying (no pun intended) women off the Running of the Bulls course is just that - a macho perception of women as inferior in that regards - surprsing in a Spain so enlightened (seriously).

IMDonehere Jul 14th, 2015 11:50 AM

Bull fighting started in Crete about 2000 years ago and if makes you feel better there are depictions that women used to confront the bulls as well at that time.

Maybe the Spaniards will contradict me, but I think one reason why Spaniards cling to bull fighting is the homogenization that the EU imposes on other areas of the members' lives. It is identified with the Spanish and something that keeps them unique and does not need approval of a committee comprised of foreigners.

(PQ it is España in Castilian.)

It's Espana in Spanish, right - I am a stamp collector!

Poor Matt Carney died years ago. I met him the first time in '85 as he paraded around with his entourage. He was a very runner when he was much younger.

Robert2533 Jul 15th, 2015 06:25 PM

Please note, there where officily 1,400,000,000 visivators to Pamplona for the fiesta, Allowing those without rooms to spend 300€ and those with rooms to part with an average 3,000€ `each, MECA will have collected somewhat around 310,000,000€
