Tell this ageing baby boomer, are bra straps the newest fashion accessory in France?
We just returned from 5 weeks in Lyon and I could not help but notice that bra straps were being seen along side tank tops' straps, dresses that required strapless bras, etc. So, the question: Is this a new fashion statement?

I don't think it is that new, since it is all I have seen in NYC and in Fl for some time now- like years.
Underwear & bellybuttons showing and tattoos showing on buttocks are hopefully going out of style..sigh..they say the trend is going back to Lady-like...
hopefully, Scarlett

No, not a fashion statement as was the transparent bra strap, which looks like, well... a transparent bra strap. I've never shopped for strapless bras in Europe but I figure that the women just couldn't give a hoot if their undergarments show (thong underpants as well, but that was an actual fashion statement years past). I suppose it is better than not wearing a bra at all.

degas, do not tell me that you have never noticed the young ladies in their very low hip huggers with the tattoo showing along the waist/hip band?
Just as I cringe when the plumber bends over and displays his rear end, those girls do much the same

Not really the newest fashion accessory either in France or elsewhere but certainly one on the most unattractive. In many cases, wearers don't even bother to have a clean and attractive bra strap!

I see bra straps hanging out here too. In Italy last year we saw lots of black BRAS showing through lacy or sheer white tops. First one I saw, I thought the poor thing hadn't check in her mirror before leaving the house, but then we discovered all the young ladies with their black bras showing!

Scarlett-
Your first post reminded me of something I saw in the Style section of the NYT a few weeks ago. It was a photo of JLo in her usual garb with a big "OUT" printed across, next to a very feminine looking Julia Stiles, in a pretty skirt, sweater and little pumps; with "in" printed across the photo. The article was about just what you had mentioned. A welcome change!

I agree that my BabyBoomerness makes cringe when I see that fashion. My mother and the Nuns would have a fit!!!! What is it with the low slung or hip hugger jeans with MAJOR LOVEHANDLES sticking out? Even my DH thinks that only a certain body type can carry out this "fashion". I am hoping for demure and understated too ;-).

Actually, the bra strap fad was over about 2 years ago. However, when it is hot and sticky, many women in big cities tend to wear as little as possible on the streets, hence the bra straps showing. Now, being ladylike is very "in." If you look to see what is coming off of the runways for fall, all the models look like the Duchess of Windsor.

I think those "transparent" ones are the funniest. They tend to be thick and shiny so they show up a lot more than flesh color or white would, especially in the sun. I think it's actually the point of them -- make sure they are seen.
